157 New Pile Of Shit

He was seething as he walked down the corridor, the conversation he overheard causing his blood to boil with rage.

How dare she? Does she really think that she is that important? That she really matters?

Taking in a deep breath, he slowly let it out, releasing all of the tension at the same time. It was fine that she thought that way. He would help her learn the error of her ways.

He would teach her how to behave properly and think about others. Unfortunately, there was no way for him to see if she repented; by the time he got his hands on her, it would be too late.

Her tears would just be one more offering to him.

----

The three of us were quiet as we left the hospital.

While a lot of it was because we didn't want anyone to overhear us, the majority of it was because there was nothing to say.

We didn't see anyone suspicious, didn't manage to overhear anything, and no one really noticed us.

"I don't know if it was a bust or not," said Levi as we got into Greyson's car. I sat in the passenger seat while Levi took the back seat as Greyson drove us out of the parking structure.

I shrugged my shoulders. "At least we got to hear the good news," I replied, a smile on my face. It was next to impossible for Monsters to have children. There might be a baby born once every ten years or so, so knowing that there was another baby coming into the world made me happy.

I had assumed that the reason we couldn't have a lot of children was simply because we would have taken over the world. There was no way humans could have stood a chance if we could have multiple births a year. Look at how many humans there were, and they died off in less than a century.

"Very true," agreed Greyson. "But now that Mary is being discharged, we can't use her as an excuse to visit."

"You could always shoot me," offered Levi with a shrug. "Not a bad wound, just one to the shoulder or something. Maybe my left one so that I can still use my right."

"You have thought about this way too much," I grumbled, turning around in my seat to look at him. "And no, no one is going to get shot."

"Then how can we make a return trip? Should we donate blood?" suggested Greyson as he signaled to get into traffic.

"I think you are forgetting the fact that you are now in my House. I don't know what it might have changed in you, but you are now tied to me. That means your lifeline alone will be extended by a few hundred years," I reminded them.

Levi's eyes went wide at my statement. "Huh. That would make things a lot easier when I have to go back into the field. I just don't know what I could tell the rest of the team."

"Ah, that reminds me, we still have to find that target," said Greyson. "So much has happened since you left the rainforest that I completely forgot."

"It also doesn't help that none of us have been back to work since then, either," agreed Levi. "I'll check in with the team and see where they are with the intel."

"What excuse did you give them for being gone for so long?" I asked. Honestly, it had never really sunk in that they hadn't gone back to work since the first time we had met. It was like they were where they belonged, and it never occurred to me that they would have lives outside.

Wow. I was a bit of an egotistical bitch, assuming that no one had a life outside of the one with me.

"Just said that we were looking in on some leads," shrugged Levi. "It also helps that the one granting my leave was with me the whole time, too."

I nodded my head with a smile. Yeah, I could see where that would make things easier. "Let me know before you disappear. And remember, you are part of the Monster world now. They can't touch you without my permission, or they'll be risking a hunt called down on them."

"Huh, think we could apply that to the humans too? It would make life so much easier if we didn't have to worry about getting shot," chuckled Levi.

"Sorry, humans are out of bounds," I replied with a shake of my head.

"Is he even able to kill a human?" asked Greyson, his brows furrowing as he thought about it.

"Technically, he is working for the humans, to protect humans, so there is a bit of a blurry line there," I answered. "I've killed people in the line of duty, and I assume that Dom has as well. You just can't go out killing indiscriminately without repercussions."

Both men nodded their heads as we got on the interstate and made our way back to the mansion. Traffic was a bitch in the city, and if I never had to go back again, I would be happy.

----

A few hours later, a knock came at my office door.

"Come in!" I called out, not looking up from the case file I was looking at. Mike had given it to me a few days ago after the ball, and I was only getting the chance to go over it now.

"Are you busy?" asked Stephanie as she came in and sat down in one of the chairs in front of me.

"Not overly," I groaned, closing the file. "More like running into a brick wall at full speed."

"Ouch, that doesn't sound good. Then let me distract you with some House business first," she chuckled, sounding a lot more relaxed after our discussion.

Then again, if someone had given me permission to finally do my job, I could have been relaxed, too.

"Hit me," I joked, leaning back in my chair. "What new pile of shit am I going to be stepping in today?"
