Chapter 28
"Now how did this happen..." whispers Corven to himself as he bakes some treats for the customers.
"Don't forget to wash these up too when you finish those." says Corven as he places some used dishes into the sink.
"Yes sir.. " says an awkward kaneki, as he struggles not to gag from the heavy aroma of baking in the kitchen, something he'll just have to get used to like every ghoul in anteiku did in the mornings.
It's been a few days since the start of Canon, though for some reason, it feels like its taken months to happen.
---PREVIOUSLY--
"..Just happened to be passing by!" struggles kaneki.
"Okay, imagine this. Your girlfriend Is naked, and lying on the ground. Then someone else there with his pants down says to you, "I wasn't doing anything here, I just happened to be here!"" says Nishiki as he's holding up a crying kaneki by the neck.
"That's the same as what you're telling me. if it were me, I'd kill the guy. That's why I'm killing you, as punishment for trespassing on my feeding ground-
"Whose feeding ground did you say?" interrupts touka, as she jumps down from the rooftop, into view in the alley.
"Since when where these your feeding grounds, Nishiki?"
"Touka.." seeing Touka, Nishiki drops Kaneki, as the boy begins coughing and breathing normally.
"I know she's dead, that binge eating woman."
"So that makes these your feeding grounds?"
"The task of distributing rhe feeding grounds Rize stole belong to the weaker ghouls, and otherwise managing the 20th ward, belongs to those of us at anteiku." says Touka as her kakugan forms, as she stairs at Nishiki
"A bunch of fence sitters like Anteiku have no right picking over every little thing!"
"This was my! feeding ground before Rize came-" says Nishiki, as he walks towards touka with a mist of his kagune, before being interrupted.
"Because you were weak."
"Being insulted by a smart mouthed punk, thats younger than me, really pisses me off."
"is it?"
At that, the two charge at each other while yelling, ending with Touka cutting Nishiki in several spots on his body, causing him to flee, but from the roof top watching from the camera feed of his nanobot, Corven flicks a nanobot at nishiki, as he then sits quietly waiting for his time to intervene.
'I know they are both pricks in the beginning of the series, but they didnt have to be this dramatic.' thinks Corven, as he eats a large piece of rebar, using it to make 5 new nanobots, with a sturdier and rustic look.
Watching the interaction in real time is different than on a screen like he's done before, causing Corven to Feel awkward at the uneeded dialogue.
With a yawn, he continues watching as Kaneki struggles with his new instincts, crying as he yells about about being a human, before touka rushes at him, shoving a glob of human meat down his throat.
It doesn't take long for Kaneki to rush and throw it up, where after touka decides to beat the crap out of him, and go off about how her life has been shitty as well, and how she thinks cake is terrible.
Wanting to hurry and end this, Corven jumps down, putting and end to the needless dispute.
"There's no place for a half-and-half like you anywhere!"
"OH? You're still gonna run your mouth like that?, isn't that a little harsh?" says Corven as he reveals himself.
"Corven?, What are you doing here!?" yells out Touka, as she kicks away Kaneki in frustration.
"Making sure you don't get yourself into any trouble, which clearly you have."
Quickly rushing towards her, Corven prepares to knock her out before she can cuade more of a ruckus due to his presence, and seeing him moving so quickly, she tries to guard herself, but is far to slow, causing Corven to appear behind her, knocking her out with the signature chop to the neck.
Letting her fall to the ground for his own amusement, Corven walks over to kaneki, reaching out his hand.
"Come with me, I'll be taking you to a place where you can get the help you need."
Staring at his hand for a moment, Kaneki moves and tries to run away while crying his heart out.
Repeating what he did to touka, Kaneki falls to the ground, and with a resounding thud, Corven now stands alone in the alley.
"I hate my life."
---PRESENT---
After dragging both touka and Kaneki to anteiku that night, Corven had introduced Kaneki to the ghoul world through anteiku, much like how Yoshimura did in Canon, and after some time and another run in with Nishiki, which almost caused the death of his best friend, Kaneki had joined anteiku, and with him still practicing to make coffee, Yoshimura had given him the job which he has the most experience with, due to previously being a human, which is helping Corven in the kitchen.
"How can you handle the smell, I feel like I'm about to vomit with every breath.." says Kaneki, with a struggle.
"Now you know why nobody else comes in here, except for Yoshimura sometimes, I was even forced to insulate the door frame when we got too many complaints from other ghouls. It doesn't bother me though, I enjoy it." says Corven as he finishes decorating his cakes and pies for the day.
"You enjoy it?! everything smells like rotting eggs chunky milk!"
"OH right, you still don't know, here, hand me those strawberries."
Handing Corven the strawberries, kaneki watches as he places one in his mouth and eats it normally, evident by him taking bits of it and properly chewing it.
"I'm kinda like you but also not."
saying that, corven reveals his kakugan on his right eye.
"From what Yoshimura told you, you're a half ghoul, a type of ghoul made from the unification of a ghoul and human, though you aren't really a natural half-ghoul, unlike me. and due to me being a natural half-ghoul, I'm able to enjoy food from both sides, though I obviously benefit more from eating human."
"So that's why you're cooking here for humans.." says Kaneki with a hint of sadness and understanding.
"I miss human food.. from how they look, I know I would've enjoyed eating a slice of your cakes while enjoying some of my books."
Seeing kaneki with his head down, Corven walks over to him and puts his hand on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry about everything you've been through, and what you'll probably have to go through in the future, but you'll see sooner or later that there's always a silver lining."
Hearing the seriousness as well as compassionate tone of Corven, Kaneki cheers up slightly.
"Now go on and get some towels, we have guests to help out."
"Yes sir." with that confirmation, Corven leaves out for the front, putting his desserts in their display case.
As well as walking towards the depressed fueguchi mother and daughter duo.
"Ryouko? Hinami?, What are you two doing here?"
Hearing a familiar voice, Hinami glows up for a second, before returning to her depressed state.
"Oh! Corven, it's good to see you again.., is Mr. Yoshimura here.. we need some help..." seeing the depressed moods of the two makes Corvens heart ache slightly.
'I'm sorry for what's happening to you, but I can't let anything change more than I already have..'
Not long after Ryouko finishes talking, touka and kaneki rush to them.
Kaneki hands them both towels to dry off, as well as gives a friendly look to the depressed hinami, who just gives a glance back, and touka eventually leads them to Yoshimuras office after they finish drying off.
'If I can't keep the timeline as close to Canon as possible, I'll ruin the advantage I have and possibly the chance of getting the dragon... it might be time for me to leave.'
"Those are the Fueguchis, they'll have to stay here for awhile, it's pretty complicated so try and take it easy with them, especially hinami, she likes books like you, so if you can, find time to take her mind off everything by showing her some of your own books." Hearing him, Kaneki nods his head as Corven walks away to his room, ending his shift early.

(HI! yes I'm back, sorry I was gone for so long, I was depressed and dealing with stuff, but am back, I will not promise this I'll be able to consistently put out new chapters but ill do my best, )
(and now that I'm back, for the past few days I've been thinking on things for the Mc to gain, a big one would be nen, I figured it'd be fun and suitable, so if anyone wants to suggest mcs nen category go ahead, I'll probably put out my own vote, and I am debating on adding a few new pieces of technology later on, but any ideas for how the story should go and what I should add are welcome) :)
