Chapter 4

Ruby woke up groaning and turned off her alarm. She huffed and stood up. Thank God her shift was in the afternoon.

She was damn tired already.... God what was I thinking when I decided to study this course. It can be so exhausting.

But then she knows why she's doing it. It's too late to give up now. She cleaned her room and put her stuff in order. Being the neat person she is.

Afterwards she changed into her workout attire and headed for the living room. Her normal routine along the years. She also realised being a doctor, you need to portray a healthy lifestyle.

You know as the saying goes 'practice what you preach.

"Morning Tammy. How's it going?" Ruby greeted the cleaner who normally cleans their condo apart from her room. She made it clear that it was off limits to her

"Morning ma'am. Everything is fine and you?"

"Same here. Well done"

In the middle of her workout, the sound of a door opened. Sensing it's her troublesome friend Taylor, she didn't bother to acknowledge her presence

"Ugh..ugh..I'm so thirsty" Tay groaned out and not returning Tammy's greetings

"And morning to you. How did you sleep?" She asked while doing her reps of squats

"I'm having a terrible migraine. Do we have any analgesics?" Tay replied grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.

"Yeah, check the cabinet on the left"

She and Tay have been living together after they graduated. Tay is her complete opposite.

She still thinks Tay is hotter than her and more beautiful physically, but annoying. She's a clumsy and lazy lady when it comes to chores and cooking. More reason why they hired a cleaner.

They didn't get along at first, cause Ruby  couldn't keep up with her clumsy lifestyle and Tay couldn't keep up with her OCD. They mostly were at each other's throats when it came to cleaning.

Ruby chuckled as she remembered that day.... "You know what, screw you Tay. You're like a puppy with no manners. I'm sick and tired and I'm leaving"

"Yeah screw you too. And you're like a crazed bossy master. Yeah get out"

Face to face with each other, they felt like ripping off each other's throats. They finally came to a conclusion about getting a cleaner, called truce and they've been good ever since

Taylor is just pretty, brilliant, really loving, but with a loose mouth. She's just like a brain with no filter, but when you get to know her. You'll love her for the amazing person she is.

"Thanks Rubs" yeah she calls her Rubs too.

She was done with her workout and went to join her at the kitchen. "So how was a night without me?" 

Tay rolled her eyes as usual "Please it's not the first night without you "

"Well that's true. Why're you acting like you have a hangover?" Ruby questioned

Tay started looking anywhere but at her

"Taayy? What are you hiding?"

She laughed nervously "Fine I hung out with hot stuff at the club okay?"

Ruby laughed and shook her head "You never cease to disappoint me Tay. So you guys banged orrrr was just a drink?" and it was Ruby's turn to wiggle her brows

Tay choked on her water "you know the answer already. We did it, but now I think I lost interest, his dick ain't all that"

Ruby's eyes widened "Jesus, you're too blunt for your own good. So you were just after the d all this while?. Wow, may Jesus bless your soul sister. You need to go to church"

"Yeah yeah whatever. Atleast everyone knows how I am. So ya'll should suck it up and leave me be" she said while breaking the eggs in the plate

"Tay you're making breakfast? What is happening today" Ruby chuckled

"Rubs I hate you. Don't you have work?"

"It's not till 2. I run the afternoon shift today as well. Look who's speaking, don't you have work as well?"

"Well I'm not on duty today, duh. You should have specialized in my field sis"

"Yeah whatever" Ruby rolled her eyes

Tay specialised in family medicine. One that has flexible working hours and even pays well. We both should have separate condos by now, but the love. We couldn't just leave each other

"That reminds me Tay, I haven't come across this hot stuff of yours since you told me about him" Ruby inquired

Tay faced the cooker "uhh.. well I later discovered that he doesn't work in our hospital. He is a scientist, he came to get some test results his organization sent to our laboratory for further examining"

"Awww poor girl. But that shouldn't hinder anything right?"

"Well no. But I told ya he just fine. His d ain't all that. Just forget it, I lost interest" concentrating on the bacons she was frying

Ruby chuckled "Alright Alright. I'mma free you. Just hurry with breakfast already "

It was Tay's turn to chuckle "And what about you. How did it go with Hobbs boy? Did you do anything funky?"

Ruby looked away shyly "I really don't wanna talk about it"

"Are you crazy? You know I don't let shits go. So better spill now"

Ruby laughed "Alright fire-breather. After you serve breakfast first"

"There it is customer" Tay placed the plate in front of her

Ruby sighed "He kissed me"

No reply for some minutes and she looked up to see Tay's eyes so wide with the pancake piece falling off her mouth... God this girl is so extra

"Oh my God, oh my God!!! Did you like it? Was it epic? Awww!!! Babes he really likes you"

Ruby looked at Tay like she's crazy, doesn't she still get it? "Nooo!!! I didn't like it. I already told you Tay, I don't like him that way"

Tay palmed her face in annoyance "girl why don't you wanna give him a chance?"

Ruby shrugged "I like him as a friend and colleague, nothing more. So let it go"

Tay sighed "fine how did it happen?"

Last night

Meanwhile Hobbs was staring at her behind as they were walking, wondering how one could be so perfect.

On the other hand Ruby was feeling self conscious and wondering what he might be thinking about her body.

"Uhh..Hobbs?" She stopped and turned to look at him

Hobbs quickly averted his eyes before he got caught and gave her a wide grin. Unknowing to him that Ruby noticed

"Yes Ruby?"

"Where precisely are we going to get this drink?" She asked

"Just downtown. There's a pub there and they sell nice fries and chicken. Except you don't want it" he replied

"Oh that's fine. Been a while since I had junk"

"Don't worry we almost there. It ain't far" he took her hands to hold

Ruby felt uncomfortable, she tried removing her hand. But he wouldn't budge, so she gave up

They finally got there and had their seats

She looked around the pub. She felt a bit insecure and felt a squeeze on her hand, she traced it to Hobbs hands and his face holding a smile which she returned with a small smile of hers

"So what do you wanna have?" Hobbs asked, breaking their awkward silence

"I'll have a soda and a takeaway of fries and chicken. Thank you"

He called the server and ordered the same thing, except that he wanted a beer instead.

Ruby looked around again and her eyes landed on him and he was staring at her. She squirmed on her seat

"Ruby?" ..

"Yeah?"

"I know we talked about this before and I  also know you know this isn't only about drinks and takeouts" he chuckled nervously "But I still don't wanna give up. I really want you and would really appreciate it if you give me a chance to atleast prove myself that I'm not bad for you"

"Uhh... Hobbs I don't think that's a good idea.  I'm not mentally ready for a relationship right now. Please try to understand "

"Yeah I do understand. But I know it might be due to some past issues you have which I can change if you'll just let me"

"Thank you.... but it's still a no. I don't want this to affect our friendship please"

"It won't Ruby. I promise"

"Alright thank you for understanding. I'll just get my takeaway and go, okay?"

Ruby stood up to leave, but Hobbs stopped her from going any further

"Hobbs what are you doing? Don't you wanna leave?"

"I've just been wanting to do this" grabbing her face, he pulled it towards his and smashed his lips on hers

Ruby was taken aback with widened eyes. It didn't even feel like his own kisses that made her toes curl. She pushed him away immediately and stared at him in disappointment.

She felt disgusted with herself. Even though she didn't reciprocate, she felt like she betrayed him... The one that still makes her heart race with just a mere thought of him.

"Ruby...." Hobbs began

She held out her hands to stop him from explaining "Goodnight Dr Raymond Hobbs"

With that she packed her stuff and left.

"Woof!! That was something. I have no words Rubs"

Sipping her juice, she replied "I had no words either"
