Entrance Exam

After entering the massive U.A. High building, we had no chance to look around and were immediately led by some older students towards the classrooms where we had the written exam that started at exactly 9.30 am.

Everyone who arrived late was immediately eliminated from the exam, so I was lucky that I didn't have to worry about being stuck in traffic or something like that…

Anyway, the written exam had 10 questions. The first nine were standard middle school topics, where we had to solve mathematics problems, answer some history questions, and even tackle some English vocabulary. Not difficult if you haven't slept in class.

More interesting was the last question because it was a multiple-choice one that couldn't be answered incorrectly but would test your morals.

The question was: Who would you save in case of a villain attack? An old person, an adult, or a child? I chose the child since they had their whole life still in front of them.

After the written test was done, there was an hour break during which we were not allowed to leave the classroom. It seemed they were careful not to let us see anything from the school for some reason.

Even though we could not disturb anyone or something like that, since it was known that students had a day off during the exam, and only those who were helping out were present.

Ochako was probably in a different classroom, so all the faces here were new to me. It seemed that not many people from my hometown wanted to go to the U.A. and rather picked a school that did not have such a strict entrance exam.

Even though it was easy until now…

"Ok, everyone, follow me to the auditorium," said a blue-haired girl entering the room, who was wearing the U.A. school uniform. And man, she was pretty…

So much that I needed to be careful not to summon hearts in my eyes like the other dudes and some girls in the classroom. But It is really hard to control a teenage body. Not like I know how it feels not to be a teenager since I died at 16 in my past life… but still, I demand more maturity from your body!

After successfully keeping my body under control, I stood up and followed her with the others until we arrived at the auditorium.

"Keiji!" I heard the energetic voice of Ochaco again and looked to my right, where she was waving at me. So I walked towards her, but since the seats next to her were taken, I took one directly behind her.

"And how was your test? I had so much trouble choosing the answer for the last question…" she said immediately after I sat down, while staring at me with her big brown eyes.

Hmm, if I remember correctly, she was a pretty good student and scored mostly the highest in the class next to me. So, she probably answered the school question really fast and then spent the rest of the time on the last question.

"The test was fine, and I think you don't need to worry about the last question. There was no right or wrong answer for it," I told her, before turning towards the podium, where a dude with large yellow spiky hair that would even make Kakashi blush appeared.

"Really? What did yo—" She tried to ask me, but the lights in the auditorium got turned off, and she became quiet, turning to the podium too.

Ah, I know who this guy is… I'm not very good with hero names, but even I know famous ones, and this one was something with a microphone in his name. Mic Boy or something like that… or Speaker Boy, that would at least explain why he is wearing a speaker as a necklace.

"What's up, UA candidates? Thanks for tunin' in, to me, your school DJ. C'mon and lemme hear ya!" screamed Mic Boy while his necklace speaker amplified his voice.

Since there was no reaction from his audience, I screamed "YA!" to not let a bro hanging there… or maybe because I was bored. I'm not sure about the reason, to be honest.

"Pfft!" But at least I could make Ochaco crack up, who was holding her mouth with both hands to control herself, while the others simply gave me strange looks. But I shrugged only and continued to listen to the hero whose name I didn't butcher for sure…

The speaker hero gave me a thumbs up and screamed, "That's the spirit! And now let me tell you about the main event, the practical exam. Are you ready?!!!"

"Yeah!!!" I screamed again since no one did and started to enjoy my time here… While the rest of the audience stayed quiet even after my second outburst.

"Oh my goodness, that is the Voice Hero, Present Mic! That's so cool!" I heard the fanboy shōnen protagonist, who was a few rows in front of me,

Right… Present Mic. At least I was not that far away.

Present Mic started to tell us about the practical exam in detail afterwards. Basically, we would be dropped off in something he called a Battle Center, where we would have a ten-minute mock battle.

At first, I thought it was a battle royal thing to sort out weaker people the old-fashioned way, but then he explained it. We were not allowed to fight other candidates. Instead, we would have to eliminate robots or villain bots, as he called them, which would give us 1, 2, or 3 points depending on how dangerous they are—

"Excuse me, sir, but I have a question?" interrupted some guy with glasses, my inner summary.

"Hit me!" screamed Present Mic, making some stage light shine on the stoic-looking student who was even larger than me.

"On the printout, you've listed four types of villains. Not three. With all respect, if this is an error on official UA materials, it is shameful. We are exemplary students. We expect the best from Japan's most notable school. A mistake such as this won't do," said the guy while pointing at the sheet of paper we all got.

And for some reason, I got the urge to bully him, but I didn't know why…

"Additionally, you screamer and you with the unkempt hair, who was muttering the whole time… Stop that. If you can't take that seriously, then leave," he said, pointing first at me and then at the shōnen protagonist, which made the other students laugh at us.

Well, maybe I know why I want to bully him now…

"All right, all right," said Present Mic to calm the people down, then added, "Examinee number 7111, thanks for calling in your concern. I didn't mention the fourth villain because he is worth 0 points and is simply an obstacle we throw ya way. So try to ignore it and focus on the ones toppin' the charts."

"Thank you very much. Please, continue," said 7111 and sat down again like a robot…

"That is all I got for you today, and I'll sign off with a little present. A sample of our school motto! Are you ready to go beyond? Let's hear a Plus Ultra!"

"Plus Ultra!" I screamed to support our school DJ, crack up Ochaco again, and annoy the stoic guy for good…

With that, the relaxing part of the exam was over, and we had to change into our sportswear and put on the special gear we needed before being brought out of the building. Where a bunch of buses were waiting to take us to the Battle Center that our DJ mentioned before.

So I put on my dark blue sports outfit, which consisted of a hoodie and jogging pants, with a white shirt under it and simple running shoes. Then placed the scroll into the pouch and put it on my pants too before entering the bus.

And only during the ride did I notice how big the U.A. really is. Sure, it looked already big from afar since it is on a sectioned-off hill that overlooks Musutafu, but being inside makes it look more like a large city itself than a simple school on a hill.

Strangely, it seems I was one of the few who were surprised by the huge terrain. Even Ochaco, who was sitting next to me, looked more curious than surprised. Maybe I should have spent more time gathering information about the school instead of recreating a technique from another anime… Nah, who cares, it was worth it.

Anyway, after a fifteen-minute ride, we arrived in front of a giant gate, which was the entrance to Battle Center B, representing a small city in itself…

Well, let the fun part begin.

Hey, everyone, and welcome to the third chapter :)

The written exam was always only mentioned in the manga/anime, so I also made it a small part of the novel.

Next time is the start of the practical exam, with some world-building, see you there.
