Grendel's Draconairy ll

Grendel's Draconairy:

There are eleven or so species of what we call Draconum. Though the other race's may call us dragons, we are Draconum. It sets us apart from the mindless rabble they also try to include in our lineage. Anyways, there are Fire Draconum, Sea Draconum, Dark Draconum, Earth Draconum, Void Draconum, Light Draconum, Bone Draconum, Plant or Nature Draconum, and the Eloch. The Eloch have a far different physiology and are thus not technically Draconum, however their traits are so similar that they have been included within our lineage.

Starting with Fire Draconum, we are born as the bearers of fire itself. Within each of us is a flame considered to be our soul. Should it be extinguished, we will die. There's no if's, and's or but's. If it's gone, you're dead. What I do have though is a "However", as extinguishing that flame is easier said than done. We as Fire Draconum are known to be the vanguard of the Draconum lineage. Our musculature is designed in a way that makes our bodies robust across the whole frame, leaving no area where we are "weak". Our scale's are like diamonds, forged within the scalding and pressurised shell of our eggs. Then, once we are born, we begin a process called soot rolling. As children, we learn to live, fly, and hunt upon the volcanic escarpment's we call home. During this time we will play and roll among large amounts of toxic ash spewed up by the many volcanoes we visit. As we grow, we will slowly gain a coating of this substance that when damaged releases these toxic materials as a gas.

We are inedible, toxic to those who try to damage us over time, and have no knowledge of the word "stamina". That's right, as long as we have food, we don't tire. We also don't need to drink water unlike nearly every other species of this world. Only the light, void, and bone draconum have this trait as well. Finally, our breath of flame is inextinguishable as long as our flame of life wills it. Of course this connection limits the amount of fire we can breathe, but that limit has rarely really been reached before our opponent burns to death anyway.

There are many traits though that we share that really don't change along the whole length of the lineage. We mate for life, are matriarchal, hold some form of breath attack, have the overhead silhouette we are all famous for, and we are of course, as greedy as any other Draconum could possibly be.

Moving on to the Dark Draconum we find what could be considered the opposite end of the spectrum of our lineage. They a beings deeply connected to the element of darkness and are considered a part of the trinity of the depths sublineage. Though currently they may be near extinction, it is not common for dragons to be wiped out and then come back through unreasonable amounts of copulation.

There is no race that Draconum cannot copulate with, because once again, we are a bunch of greedy bastards. There is nothing we cannot claim. It's one of the defining traits of our lineage.

Back to the Dark Draconum, they, alongside the Sea Draconum and Void Draconum, uphold the trinity of the depths. The shadow, the abyss, and endless expanse. The one thing that defines this sublineage is their use of fear and awe. The sheer scale of their power is very different from the straightforward devastation that Fire Draconum and the like can wreak. Dark Draconum especially so due to their indirect nature.

Their attachment to the shadow goes far beyond just control, it's a necessity. A Dark Draconum with no access to a shadow will undoubtedly go insane. Their whole body is something that flows and resonates in the same way a shadow would, shifting and shaping itself into the fears of our minds' eye. Without a shadow to resonate with, their true form is revealed.

Their true form is something that is found disgusting to them beyond a certain age. It is unknown as to why, but their hatred of it goes far beyond the normal limits of disgust and borders on complete hatred. 

However I have no idea what happens after one is exposed for too long and begins to go insane. Though I have spent a lot of time taking care of the current matriarch Tyvelia, it's not like she fears light. I didn't exactly pay too much attention to their species as a whole either until I had learned they were getting wiped out like locusts. Though I could test her, I'm not about to ruin the chances for her to repopulate her race.

Anyways, besides their weaknesses to a lack of shadow they have a lot of strengths as well. They are high class magic users from birth. Not elemental manipulation, magic. Their eggs are kept in dark, damp, and empty spaces. Why empty? Because they absorb any and all living matter placed in a couple meter radius. This strengthens their soul and mind, which then allows them to grasp the deepest concepts given to them by their parents upon their birth. Now how does one impart so much information to a newborn? Apparently by melding shadows with their children and sharing memories. It's something that helped us accept the Eloch when we came upon them all those years ago.

After receiving those memories they will go on to further develop their resonance, practice magic, and prepare to strike fear into their first victims. Finally, when they receive their parents permission, they head out to scare their first opponents. This will then give them the fear form they will use for the rest of their life.
