He jumped at a dull thud overhead, and his heart raced. Jesus. He wished Bennie would quit messing around and come downstairs. He’d been up there for hours. Sure, they’d told Bennie’s mom they’d go through the stuff in the house before the estate sale that weekend. But enough was enough. They’d made some crazy hot love up there, yet afterwards, as they’d looked through the trunk, Bennie had grown quiet, subdued, distant.

He also refused to take that damned key from around his neck. Jordan rubbed his face, wondering if he was imagining the strange glitter and heated excitement in Bennie’s blue eyes, an almost manic glee…

A hand dropped on his shoulder and he let out a strangled cry and jerked away. “God, Bennie, you scared the crap out of me.”
