39 More to Take Him Down

Chapter 39: More to Take Him Down

The man felt a chill when he saw the posture of his target. William's black trench coat fluttered along with his long hair. He had one hand raised in the air as if he was holding a sword, though there was apparently nothing on it.

'What is he doing?' As a Sequence 6 Beyonder, the man was quite experienced in battling not only other Beyonders but also vengeful spirits and other supernatural elements. However, he was puzzled by the fact that William began to exude an inhuman aura that was more like evil spirits than humans. 'It doesn't seem like he has lost control. It must be some sort of strange power of this new pathway.'

He decided that, given the lack of knowledge, it would be best to keep his distance and test his abilities.

He was about to cast Electric Shock again when he noticed something surprising.

"The mist is being drawn towards him?" He unconsciously blurted out these words when he noticed that, in fact, his spell seemed to be being absorbed by William. 'No, it looks like the air, in general, is being drawn into it and redirected, like when you open a window and it creates a draft.'

William looked up, and his eyes were emotionless. Only then did the man realize that he had let out a noise, giving away his presence.

The Nighthawk moved at top speed in complete silence, the Sequence 6 Beyonder could barely follow it with his eyes, and he had to use his spiritual sense to get a good grasp of his movements.

William began circling the man to prevent him from escaping his grasp, jumping from one building to another as if he were wrestling on the ground. While fighting Debris, one of the powers he acquired was a much higher spiritual perception than usual, so it was easier for him than before to spot his opponent. Even so, he preferred not to lose sight of it so as not to risk it.

In an instant, he stopped circling and instead lunged at the Theosophy Order envoy.

He noticed and tried to stop him. A symbol lit up on his body, and icicles were released again. However, William now possessed some clairvoyance and simply avoided them.

The Sequence 6 Beyonder frowned, and another symbol flashed on his body. By this time, William was already swinging the invisible sword at his neck.

The man's body contorted to avoid damage, and he drew a knife to attempt to stab William, taking advantage of his slightly open stance. However, his spirituality warned him of the danger, and he tried to withdraw.

He didn't quite get there in time as blood spurted from his chest as he was slashed.

'Wh-what?' He was stunned for an instant, but the pain snapped him back to reality just in time to expel a great deal of wind that pushed William a good distance. 'I was sure that I had avoided it. What did he do? '

William eyed the man coldly. His training had not only been based on his powers, but also on training the advantages that Debris gave him.

When he was a Sequence 9 Knight, Debris allowed him a certain level of clairvoyance and increased spiritual vision. As a Sequence 8 Beyonder, his connection to the sword was strengthened and he gained certain additional abilities.

One of them was greater control over his body, which allowed him to use more or less force with each attack and move without making a sound. The other was the one he had just demonstrated.

Using Debris as a catalyst, he could condense his spirituality to form a spirit sword, invisible if Spirit Vision was not used. It would function as a second attack emerging from Debris's blade.

A silent and deadly attack, William suspected that only a Sequence 5 Beyonder would have a powerful enough spiritual perception to completely avoid it. He dubbed it the Ghost Sword because of how it worked.

The only drawback that Ghost Sword had was that it spent a large amount of spirituality. As strong as he was within the Sequence 8 Beyonders, he was still a Low-Sequence Beyonder, his spirituality was quite limited. In total, he could use Ghost Sword three times before having to leave the match and recover.

'I have two more chances. He must still be holding a trump card, probably a Sequence 5 ability, maybe even Demigod level.' That thought was terrifying, he knew that he was still far from being able to fight a Sequence 4 Beyonder, and an attack of that level would be enough to eliminate him. 'Luckily, it seems that the higher the level of the skill, the weaker it becomes. I remember that Madam Sharon's icicles were much more powerful and faster than the ones he uses.'

The assassin was from a pathway unknown to William, he wasn't entirely sure how his abilities worked, but he had figured out a good part of them.

'Should I run and round up the others?' The thought was mostly for the possibility that the enemy had a Demigod-level ability. 'No, most likely he has something that allows him to be unaffected by a Nightmare if he has dared to come this close to the Church.'

Furthermore, if the man really had registered a Demigod-level skill, bringing more people would only put them in danger.

The man was still recovering from the damage he had inflicted, so he decided to keep up the pressure. However, in that instant, a symbol flashed, and the man began to carry an absurd amount of spirituality.

"In fact, now I'm not surprised that they sent me to take down a Sequence 8." He laughed maniacally. "However, this fight is already over."

William's eyes widened, and his clairvoyance warned him of what was to come.

"You can't run away!" the man exclaimed.

William only had time to place the sword in front of him to protect himself. Then the sky roared, and lightning struck.

The building collapsed before the supernatural lightning, and a great cloud of smoke rose. People began to go out into the street, wondering what had happened, some even began to shout and point to the place where a few seconds ago there had been a two-story house.

During the commotion, the man hid in an alley and began to flee.

'The Nighthawks will be here soon, and I've spent all the Records I've accumulated for so long.' He had lost more in this battle than he expected when it was proposed to him, now he would have to call in various favors again to regain his full power.

"Where are you going?" Behind him, he heard a voice that made his blood run cold.

Shack.

An invisible sword pierced his neck.

The man could barely turn his head to see the disheveled figure of William. His hair was slightly singed, his trench coat had been torn, and he looked like he'd been through a shredder. The arm that was holding Debris was torn in several places and was covered in blood.

"Go to he-" The man didn't have time to finish his sentence when William made a swing with his sword, and his head flew off with the wizard hat going in the opposite direction.

Before he fell, William grabbed it by the hair.

"You're going to need something else if you want to take me out, Theosophy Order."
