38 Attack

Chapter 38: Attack

"They keep showing up non-stop." William wiped the blood off the edge of his sword. "Theosophy Order, they have more members than we imagined."

He crouched down to inspect the two bodies that lay at his feet. These were Sequence 9 Beyonders who had tried to catch him off guard during his watch.

"I should thank them, the experience I'm gaining from these daily battles would take much longer to gather otherwise." He took the Beyonder characteristic from both of them.

It also helped him to learn about this secret. Apparently, when a Beyonder died he left behind a remnant of his essence. Dunn had told him that they could be used as substitutes for the main ingredients for potions from the same pathway as the deceased.

William quickly connected the dots. Considering that many creatures had gone extinct over the ages if Old Neil's history lectures had any truth to them, maybe some pathways would have been cut off if the characteristics hadn't existed.

When a High-Sequence Beyonder died, his powers were passed on to someone else, explaining why the organizations were so powerful and influential.

He kept the two Beyonder characteristics for himself and then handed them over to the Captain. They were useless to him since he could not use them, and selling them was prohibited by the Church.

It had been about a week since Klein had advanced to Sequence 8, and in that short amount of time, William had taken down twelve Sequence 9 Beyonders, and four Sequence 8s. He didn't quite understand why they were wasting so many men.

Clearly, they were targeting Chanis Gate because all the attacks had been made near it. However, seeing that they had failed, there was no point in continuing to send their members to their deaths.

'Unless they want us to become too lax so they can launch a massive surprise attack.' William continued to stand guard in front of the gate, like an unbreakable column. 'But if they want to win they'll need to send a Sequence 6 Beyonder or higher, and they've never shown to have those kinds of assets before.'

William was getting stronger at a fairly rapid rate. Unlike other pathways, his relied heavily on the Beyonder's skill. Physique, and swordsmanship, were attributes that could be refined through a natural process, and William's powers were to enhance them.

If a not-very-skilled Berserker faced a common group of soldiers with guns, he would probably die. Nonetheless, at this point, William would probably be able to fight and win against the most decently experienced Sequence 7 Beyonders, even without Debris. Somehow, it seemed as if the pathway had been created to work in keeping with young Nighthawk's talents.

"Kenley, Royale, good night." He greeted his colleagues who arrived to replace him.

They both looked at the corpses and sighed, exasperated.

"They keep sending people, huh?" Kenley's question was answered by a brief nod from William, drawing a sigh from him. "Okay, the rest of the night should be quiet, go home and get some rest."

"I will. See you tomorrow, and remember that we all plan to go eat at that restaurant that someone recommended to Leonard." He said goodbye and went on his way home.

Halfway there, however, a chill suddenly ran down his spine.

"Shit, I didn't expect something like this before going to sleep." He turned into an alleyway, and there was a man dressed in a trench coat and wizard's hat. He couldn't quite see his face, but that didn't matter.

"William Hastur, I have been entrusted with your elimination." The voice sounded relatively young, this person was probably in his thirties.

William didn't answer, but his sword was already in his hand.

'Sequence 6 Beyonder. The Theosophy Order really had such powerful members? And do you want to get me out of the way that much?' He analyzed the situation carefully, his berserker potion had already been digested, and he didn't need to act recklessly.

Suddenly, a dense fog covered the place. William jumped hard and kicked off the wall to climb onto the roof of the nearest building.

'He doesn't seem to be from the Assassin Pathway, my knowledge regarding Sequence 6 is limited, I must carefully analyze his movements.'

"Darling, behind you!" Debris warned him in his head. He didn't hesitate for a second and jumped to the side, narrowly avoiding an electrical charge that scorched the ground he'd been standing on.

'My spiritual intuition didn't warn me…' he looked at the Beyonder who was standing on the roof of the next building, apparently surprised that William had dodged that attack. 'It seems he has some kind of power to interfere with it.'

"You're better than I expected from a Sequence 8." The man spoke with slight reluctance. The mist began to cover his current position as well.

'He seems to be a magician type, he's probably not very strong in close combat, but he's a Sequence 6, so I have to be careful.' William had learned his lesson during his match against Madam Sharon, he was not going to be overconfident. 'I'll wait for him to launch an attack at me and close the distance in an instant.'

Between the fog and the inability to feel anything with his spiritual intuition, William found it difficult to see anything. He had to rely on his sense of hearing enhanced by his Beyonder powers.

He heard something coming towards him, cutting through the air and mist in its path.

'There he is.' Red lightning flashed across his body and the ground cracked as he avoided the icicles. He moved at a speed far exceeding that of any human and his sword left a silver trail behind.

Sequence 6 Beyonder's eyes widened as he saw William appear in front of him. Still, he had time to react.

A symbol flashed on his body, and it distorted just to avoid William's cut. In an instant, another symbol flashed and a powerful slashing wind lashed at William, who swung his sword wildly.

A chainsaw-like sound was produced as the two powers collided. In the end, William put more force and the wind was cut.

The Nighthawk looked at his sword.

'I don't think it will last much longer, I'll demand a better one from the Captain the next time I see him.' He put it back in the sheath to the confused look of the Beyonder. 'Those symbols seem to activate just before using an ability, he has Beyonder powers registered in his body and he releases them whenever he wants. It's a strong ability, but it must have a limit, he's not a demigod after all.'

He smiled.

"Looks like I'll have to go all out from now on." His hand came to rest on Debris, and a terrifying pressure settled on the place. "Rejoice. From now on, I will attack with everything I have."
