What Happened to Me?

After the exciting turn of events that just took place, Nilan is now once again alone in the room.

'It's nice my family cares for me so much. I know I didn't have that in my past life. I shouldn't keep them waiting and help with breakfast. Plus, I may get a chance to ask more about this world.'

While Nilan and John fused and became one person, many of their memories were lost.

So even though Nilan remembers his family and the sickness he was affected by, he can't remember much else, including information about John's life.

'It feels weird not to remember many parts of either of our lives, but I don't think it matters too much.'

'We both had the same goal: we wanted a life of freedom and a life where we could do what we wanted.'

After freshening up and looking more presentable, Nilan walked out of his room and down the hall towards the savory aroma from the kitchen.

As he entered the kitchen, he could see his two beautiful family members, Celeste and Ava, dressed in cooking aprons with their hair tied in a ponytail.

They were so focused on cooking that they didn't even notice Nilan approach them.

'Man, I am so lucky to have such beautiful women caring for me.'

'I should probably stop staring at them before they notice I'm here.'

"Ahem. It smells absolutely divine in here!"

The women snap out of their tunnel vision, look at each other, and bust out into laughter.

Nilan appears confused, but after a moment, they calm down, and Celeste speaks.

"Sorry, my love, it has just been an extremely long time since you could talk to us properly.

I almost forgot how you always knew how to break the tension. You always know how to make us laugh and cheer us up."

"I was a little worried that you would be a little different after battling that sickness, but it warms my heart to know that you are still our Nilan."

Nilan looks at them a little embarrassed, pouts, and mumbles.

"I wasn't trying to be funny."

Nilan then speaks up while setting the table.

"Anyway, I have a couple of question you might think is weird, and I would appreciate it if you both could help me."

"It appears that some of my memories have disappeared.

Don't worry though, I will never forget my two most beautiful and favorite people."

Ava, with red cheeks, liking the fact that her brother called her beautiful mumbles.

"He has gotten more shameless."

Celeste, smiling at the compliment and how her daughter is acting, says.

"We can answer any questions you have.

I got worried you forgot who your two best women were, but I'm happy it seems you love us too much to forget us!"

She says the last part with a giggle.

"Thank you both for understanding and how could I not love you?

You each cared for me while I was sick and never gave up on me, no matter how bad it was getting."

"That takes an extraordinary amount of love, compassion, patience, and even faith that I would be strong enough to push through."

"I would have to be some heartless monster to not reciprocate those feelings tenfold to you.

I promise I will protect you both with everything I have and give you the lives you deserve."

Nilan said the last part with a dead serious face, staring them both in the eyes.

Hearing his pledge, the two women had stunned faces that slowly blushed bright red.

They quickly shook their heads as they realized what was happening, and Ava spoke.

"I honestly don't feel too worthy of that promise, but I will try to live up to your image of me. I will always be by your side because you are the person I love the most in the world."

Ava had a strong and confident stance while speaking until the words she used started to sink in, and her face started turning bright red.

"I-I didn't mean t-that type of l-l-love, you know? W-Why would I? Y-You're my b-brother and everything. I-I'm not saying you are not h-handsome, quite the opposite."

"W-Wait, I-I didn't mean it like that...I'm going to shut up and die now."

She was getting so flustered that one might be able to see smoke rising from her head as the confident person she was before crumbled into a flustered mess.

She then speed walks down the hall and into what is assumed to be her room.

Celest giggles as Nilan is taken aback by how much his sister cares for him.

'Was she always like this?'

"So, what kind of questions did you have?"

Celeste snaps Nilan out of his reverie.

"Right. So besides knowing you, Ava, and how my dad died, I don't remember much else."

Celest pauses what she is doing and looks up at Nilan with a slightly concerned face.

"I guess that disease has a unique toll on everyone. There is a lot to talk about. I don't even know where to begin."

Nilan ponders for a second to come up with a good starting question.

"I guess we can start with how long I was out for or when I started having this disease?"

Celeste puts down the things she was working on, walks over to the table, and sits down, motioning Nilan to do the same.

Nilan pulls up a chair and sits face-to-face with Celeste as she begins.

"We first noticed symptoms when you were 17. You kept saying you were fine and didn't want us to worry.

You took a turn for the worst four days later as you started coughing up blood.

You still tried to hide it, saying you were fine, but I forced you to get seen by a doctor.

By then, it was too late, and you only deteriorated more, ending up bedridden at the end of the week.

We knew how bad this disease was after having lost your father to it."

Celeste starts to get emotional, and with tears welling up in her eyes, she continues.

"I was so scared to lose you, and your sister was destroyed hearing the news.

You keep fighting, knowing it was a losing battle, telling me and your sister you can make it through this.

I didn't believe you initially and had nearly given you hope, but you kept holding on."

Celeste is now holding back tears as she sniffles, takes a breath, and continues.

"Most people die after 1-3 months, but you held on.

As I saw your condition level out, I started regaining hope.

I talked to anyone I could and did anything I had to. No price was too much. After all, you were still suffering daily and refused to give in.

I sold everything I could that had value. Your sister helped, too, even giving me the idea of moving us into a smaller house and sharing a room with her."

"Ava found out she had a natural affinity to magic and immediately went to school and spent every second she could learning healing magic to keep you stable.

I wasn't making too much progress as there weren't many cases where the infected lived, and even then, they ended up losing control over most of their body."

"Last night, you took another nose dive as your skin started going through necrosis and peeling off.

I stayed by your side all night while Ava tried to help you with healing magic.

Ava managed to get the necrosis to stop by the morning, and we went out to buy mana potions so Ava could keep you stable.

That's when we walked into your room and saw you fully healed.

I thought I was dreaming. As a matter of fact, I still do.

I don't know how you pulled through, but honestly, I don't care. I'm just happy you are ok now, and my prayers were answered."

She then gives Nilan a big, tight hug, which would have probably felt a little suffocating if not for the giant pillows on her chest.

Nilan then spots her sister peeking around the corner with a sad face.

It is safe to assume she was there listening to the whole story.

While hugging Celeste Nilan whispers a heartfelt "Thank you."

After a moment he clears his throat, breaks the hug, and says.

"Ok, I'm starving what did you guys make for dinner?"

He motions with his eyes to Ava hiding around the corner and Celest understanding what he means says.

"Oh yay! Ava had the amazing idea to cook your favorite meal to celebrate you feeling better. We made you some god old classic Mac N' Cheese!"

Ava then appears from around the corner she was hiding in acting like she just walked in.

"I made sure it was super creamy just the way you like it!"

Nilan laughs to himself and says

"Thank you. Let's not let the food go cold and eat I already set the table so let's dig in!"

All three of them spend a much-needed night together enjoying the food and reminiscing about old memories until they start feeling tired.

Not wanting to give in to their tiredness they tried staying up as long as they could.

Eventually, they all succumbed to their needs and fell asleep together on the couch cuddling one another.
