The Rotten Path of a Wayward Knight

Ten years ago, in Old Osaka… I failed to protect my comrades and even lost my husband to a traitor who abused the fact that my husband sees him like his own child.

Ten years ago, I brought dishonor to my clan and discord amongst my brethren. Even to this day, my failure to contain and minimize the damage that we sustained is a common way for my faction's dissenters to invalidate my words.

Ten years ago… I almost lost everything.

"My fellow Vessel… Let's give them a taste of what it feels like to wage war against us who embodies the order of the universe."

But now, I can reclaim all of that. I can show them that I am not the same person that I was back then who didn't have the right reason and conviction in my heart to decimate them and their unrighteous actions.

"That is good, William. Let us show them that even if they use those powers, they are nothing- Abauf-!!!"

Without even letting her finish her words, Rai leapt into the action and planted a kick on the young woman's face which sent her flying into the wall of the Subjugated Subspace.

"If you want us to end this in an instant so that you won't feel any pain before dying, we are prepared to do that."

"YOU!!!"

"I won't let you!"

William was about to shoot out a blast of light towards Rai, but the sharp lightning bolt that I shot towards him was faster and it hit him on the side of his torso.

"You ordered us to despair earlier… I would like you to say that again."

"You… Urgh! How did you manage to hide that power?!"

"Even Lady Aishi didn't notice it… so why… why did you have to appear in that form now of all time?!"

"Because I need you two to realize how much you have desecrated the Principles that we exist to embody and protect."

"I am the Vessel of Law. She is the Vessel of Justice."

"No… No way…! The vision of onee-chan…"

"Right… you three have received your warning from that usurper. And yet, you have become far too arrogant in the superiority of your strength and numbers that you didn't take it seriously."

Ephraim, who was dressed in a magnificent pure white robe and holding a spear that glows crimson red, approached Aishi who is still recoiling from the kick she received to her face and spoke about something that is just half-clear to me from the disjointed memories of the one who is dwelling in me.

"You… You weren't supposed to be this strong yet! It has only been a year since we received that warning! No matter how much you trained and acquired more power from your Spirit, you shouldn't be this strong!"

"Oh yeah? Then how did I manage to easily overpower you like this?"

"That…"

"There's only one answer… and that is the fact that no matter how much you and your cohort worship that Tainted Spirit, you have never and will never ever be able to overcome the boundless rift that is the distance between our power and authority."

"That has been a fact since time immemorial… and it will be even to this era."

To my shock, even though he should've lost all control of his body after I shot him directly with a lightning bolt, William sped towards Ephraim to stop him from stabbing Aishi with his spear. But before he can reach him, he became frozen in place before acting as if something is holding him by the throat.

"To think that you so vehemently serve these three like a slave when they are supposed to be the personification of total and unbridled freedom… The irony is laughably uncanny."

It was at this moment that I noticed something peculiar about Ephraim… something that I never noticed before since my thoughts was directed to the fact that I have reawakened my sealed powers.

"I can kill you now and be rid of pests like you. One less slave to these three to think about and a significant damage to their strength…"

"STOP! DON'T YOU DARE!"

"Oh? Finally caring about others once you feel how powerless you are? You humans really are amusing…"

That's right… ever since he assumed that form, he hasn't been acting like the Ephraim that I know!

"I really wish that I can end your life now… after all, you are one of the greatest obstacles that our side has to overcome if we are to win in the coming war…"

As soon as he walked by and touched my shoulder, I felt a jolt of electricity climbing to my head and for a moment, lost control of my body to speak one line that would let me know what all of these things mean to the ones who are calling me and him as their "Vessels".

"Yes… This is something best left to my Vessel who has sworn to cut down this man who took her beloved's life."

"…Good. Then I will leave him to you. As for the young woman… she needs to learn who I am and how I intend to drive terror to the hearts of all of them who are against our side."

As my control over my body returned, Ephraim held his spear firmly and casted something that I already knew he can do.

"Subspace Subjugation… <Ars Caelestia>"

"You can't be-!"

As soon as that was cast, he and Aishi was separated from the subspace and Aishi's Subjugation was broken, returning us to the subspace we were in before which resembled a devastated school campus.

"Now that we have been rid of interlopers, I believe it is time for me to lead you to your grave."

"Hahaha…"

"HYAHAHAHAHA!!!"

I am not sure if all of these shocking revelations and circumstances has finally did him in, but that laugh sure can only come from someone who has lost his sanity.

"To think that for the past decade, you have been hunting me as I gathered more and more power to give you the same painful death as that naïve man… and you suddenly appear here with that form that made all of my overwhelming power meaningless…"

"I can't take it. No… I WILL NEVER ACCEPT IT!"

As soon as he spoke those words, an explosion of Astra energy came from him and surged out like a massive gush of light that pierces through the dark.

"I SWORE TO BE STRONGER THAN ANYONE ELSE! I INTEND TO NOT BE DEFEATED BY ANYONE!"

Slowly, his wounded and tired body was covered with light which healed his injuries and filled him with so much Astra energy that it seemed like he just joined in the battle.

"So, that was the reason why you turned your back against us, tricked Kaede to spill the data of all her Astra energy experiments and… murdered my husband? Because you wish to be stronger and undefeatable?"

"YEAH! AND I WILL SHOW YOU JUST HOW MUCH POWER I ACQUIRED SINCE THE LAST TIME WE MET!"

"…If only my Celestial Spirit isn't a stickler to her Principle of not bringing any emotion to a fight… I would've already burned you until none of your ashes would remain in sight."

*Shiii….! BZZZTTT!!!*

From its scabbard, I drew out the sword that Justice provided to me, and it glowed white-hot and fizzled with energy so condensed that seems like it is warping the space around it.

"Renjiro has my husband's blade which he swore to kill you with… Lucas took an oath to be the one to take your life… Kai bears so much hatred against you that he is prepared to pour the rest of his remaining time in this world just to take your life… And Kaede…"

"What of her? Does she still yearn for me as if I didn't use her to my purpose years ago?"

"That's something that you have to see for yourself… That is, if you can even step out of this fight with your life."

From the memories given to me by Justice, I spoke out words in a language that I do not know myself but can somehow understand.

"Aila, Ispiri Hustis, expunio dia seria tot en quel tot dar Nurg. Woz dia divia lue, Aila wai expunio iye entu esturi dar klasa eu hustis."

As soon as all of that was spoken, I became covered in a maelstrom of lightning and as soon as it dissipated, thick and dark clouds covered the area around me as I took a battle stance with sword in hand.

The pillar of superheated plasma that he sent my way was easily dispersed by the rotating formation of thick clouds around me. It was like a blanket of storm clouds that wouldn't let even a pip of sunlight to pass through to the ground.

Worse yet for him, it was something that I cast with the intention of staying around for a long time. Its winds collected moisture from inside the subspace and drove it upwards to rapidly form storm clouds that amplified my succeeding attacks further.

"Countering my lightning strike by nullifying it with a wall of photons? I must say, I am impressed."

As the lightning bolts that I sent towards him was met with a wall of condensed light that nullified its energy, I gave him some credit which made him snicker arrogantly.

"What now? Finally acknowledging that you have no chance against me even with that form?!"

He was so full of himself that he didn't notice the fact that I finally collected enough static electricity from the clouds to form a massive lightning bolt that fell towards him.

"It seems like the storm in my sword has been calmed… Time to bring this fight nearer to you."

In a blink of an eye, my body that seemed to become one with lightning emerged at the other side of the subspace. It was as if I was teleported in an instant.

"Draw your Weapon now, William… or I would end your life in an instant."

"Ghhh… Guack!"

"You arrogant bastard… If you don't fight me with your all, maybe you don't deserve to reach your goal at all."

As soon as I said that, William's eyes turned from being a look of confidence to a look of absolute rage.

"What did you just say, you hag?"

"…So, you're dumb now too? What part of what I said did you not understand?"

"You dare insult my dream of becoming the strongest?! I will make you take those words back!"

Finally, he showed his full form as a Psychic. One that I knew he has been hiding as he initially thought that I am not worth to face him in his strongest form.

"Tch! To think that I have to use this disgusting thing… But if I can bring glory to Lady Himari, I no longer care about what I should do."

At that very moment, the judgement that I was given to take precedence in have started.

Even though my parents once said that of us two male siblings, I am destined to a greater place than Lucas as I am his elder, I eventually realized that my parents' premonitions were nothing but empty lies… just like how they told us that everything will be alright so long as we five are loving and looking after each other… and weeks later, they both turned into lustful beasts due to an MB2 infection and had to be put down by the Ministry of Health in Sicily…

From what I understood in the documents given to me alongside their death certificates, it seemed like both of them had secret affairs with different carriers of the disease. And when they did each other once, those two different strains of the virus morphed into a more vicious type of the illness and… the rest was too horrid to even be spoken.

Maybe it was because those two are still far too young to have their own outlook in life or realize the meaninglessness of the words of these so-called "vicars", but whenever I was forced to listen to their teachings, I see and hear nothing but a futile attempt to hide the natural desires of humanity and to overcome them for some "great reward in heaven" or "fulfilling the path of righteousness".

I swore to never embody their teachings and search for my own way to find fulfillment in life and happiness as a living being… and yet…

I apologize for flinging you from country to country as soon as you arrive back here… but we really are too short-handed to cover the troubled countries of the world that needs our assistance."

Of us three siblings, I was the only one who cannot find a true and noble reason to live… As Priscilla became a nun and served the needy across the world and Lucas became a knight that spoke words of hope and salvation in wherever he was sent by the Order, I was the only one who always volunteered to work ceaselessly in the countries where I was sent… and yet, I felt no joy or fulfillment in my life even once.

"Even though we don't have a Chapter in that country, it is still one of the few remaining bastions of human civilization… As our foremost diplomat, we are sending you to Japan to mediate between the large mafia group that has a significant influence on the public and the government that is being wary of the said organization."

When I first came to Japan as the representative of the Knight's Order of Malta, I was a man who has lost all of his hopes and dreams. At that point, I have lost all desire to even try. I knew it already… unlike Lucas and Priscilla, I do not have any fervor in my heart to devote myself to a cause. Unlike my fellow diplomats, I don't really care if the factions that I am mediating for would lay down their weapons for the sake of peace or continue with their battles until both sides become desolated.

I was lost. I do not know what to do in my life. I do not know why I am even alive.

I wasn't born to show mercy to the needy. I wasn't born to give words of hope to the despairing. I wasn't born to trouble myself with the battles of the warmongers.

Back when I just joined in the Sumeragi group and went under the tutelage of Imamura Touya-sensei and was paired with Imamura Kaede and Furuta Renjiro, I thought that the reason why I awakened this extraordinary power is to defeat this group called the Miyazono conglomerate.

For the Sumeragi group, it was to stop them from their cruel experiments on human cloning and making Awakened individuals like we are to use their powers in the wrong ways. For me, it was far simpler. I just wanted to show them that I, someone who decided to become the strongest Psychic, cannot be defeated by anyone they will send against me.

"Urgh…!"

"William…san…"

"Renjiro…. Kaede…"

But… the truth soon hit me harder than any attack that I can muster back then in that confrontation.

"So young… You three who were sent here haplessly by those senile elders of yours… you're not even of age and you're already being sent out like sheep to the slaughter."

"Lady Himari, we've cleared the obstacles on the road set up by that Ferrokinetic psychic. We are ready to move out again."

"They're all drained of their Astra energy and are barely conscious. Would you like us to take over the work of getting rid of them?"

For the first time since I became a Psychic, I was bested by someone in battle and left half-dead and half-conscious. Not even Touya-sensei or Professor Akari defeated me in an all-out fight… and yet, this young woman effortlessly defeated us.

"But Lady Himari, they might be-"

"I said no already. Let us take our leave."

"…I-I cannot allow this!"

"They are enemies of our great cause and hindrances to the realization of the world that we promised to humanity! I cannot accept that we allow them to live and hinder us again later on!"

"Is that really your opinion in this matter? That they are hindrances to our cause?"

What happened next after she snapped her fingers was something that even to this day sends shivers down my spine and makes my heartbeat faster both in admiration and terror.

"Lady Himari… why…?"

"Those who cannot respect the life and liberty of others… do not deserve to receive and enjoy them as well… That is what you are. And that is the reason why I must get rid of you."

Before I lost my consciousness just like Kaede and Renjiro, I heard those words and realized that I have been fighting at the wrong side all this time.

Why am I fighting for a group that wishes to stop such a noble cause of honoring the life and freedom of all humanity? Why am I going against the people who are fighting for the things that gave my life a purpose?

"Halt! Who are you?!"

"He's dressed as a Psychic of the Sumeragi mafia! Attack him!"

"Stop! I am not here to fight!"

But most of all… I witnessed something that I desire more than anything else.

"These are Diminisher bracelets. They will lock your Astra energy and stop you from using any abilities. But since they aren't perfect, you will also be followed by two Gardener candidates who has strict orders to take your life the split second that you attempt to harm Lady Himari. Am I understood?"

"Yes. I won't do anything harmful… after all, why would I do such a thing?"

"Hmph! Don't try to talk your way out of my suspicion."

No… to be exact, I saw the thing that I desire the most from someone who caught my eye in a way that never happened before to me.

"Well… I am surprised to say the least."

"To think that you would seek an audience with me months after we last met… in a battle that almost killed you and your comrades too."

As the two Gardener candidates seethed with anger and shouted threats and insults towards me, I and her looked at each other's eyes as if weighing each other's thoughts.

"Satoshi-kun and Taka-kun… I want you to leave the two of us alone."

"We cannot do that! Who knows what he will do once we leave!"

"This is an order! I want you to leave the two of us alone now!"

After being given those words, the two begrudgingly left the room, leaving me and her there all alone.

"I already know what you would be asking for… I can see it in your eyes both back when we fought and when you asked for the two of us to be left alone."

The tears that didn't fall even during that time when we lost our elder siblings in the civil war and our parents to a vicious disease, fell after I saw the world that she wanted to make.

"I am glad to hear such conviction from you who once wished to hinder it… I am glad… truly glad that you have now found the right cause to fight for."

"Hik! Kuh!"

Though I am a year older than her, it was like I am an infant cradled by her as I cried. She made me kneel to her height and sunk my face into her bosom while stroking my head and back gently to comfort me.

That was the beginning of my treachery against the people who have fooled me into believing that hindering the creation of a better world is the right thing to do.

"You should quit already, Renjiro. Touya-sensei and Kirin-sama would surely understand that you have the right to chase after your own happiness too. You'll be graduating from high school soon… maybe you should confess to Katsumi-san and think about your future with her."

"To be honest, I don't really know what I should do about that thing, Will… Imamura-sama saved me from my enslavement to a pair of Miyazono Gardeners… and Katsumi-chan gave me my name and humanity. I want to repay Imamura-sama by being their trusty comrade… and I also want to be with Katsumi as someone important to her."

There was that time when I convinced Renjiro to leave the Sumeragi group for him to be with the girl that he solemnly loved.

I knew that Kaede had those feelings towards me and being the child of Professor Akari, holds access to the massive archive of the Sumeragi group's research works and data about Astra energy and Psychic powers.

"I don't think it's necessary to deactivate the Replicant once young master Kai is able to live outside of his cytostatic chamber. After all, it is still the child that you and Kirin-sama raised and treated as your son for the past seven years."

"That isn't possible, Will-kun. You know the rules just as all of us do… No matter how much time we have spent with him, that Replicant of Kai has to go once our son is ready to be reawakened."

I attempted to persuade Touya-sensei to not deactivate the Replicant of his son once the real deal is able to leave his cytostatic form. It may seem like genuine concern, but my true reason for doing this is to simply drive a wedge in the clan that has the greatest influence in the Sumeragi group.

Months later, I conspired with the Gardener who is trying to set a foothold in Old Osaka and after the Sumeragi group hurriedly rallied their men to defend their strongholds there and protect the citizens that has strongly sided with them, I finally showed who I am serving all this time.

"I will be taking this, Kaede-chan…"

"Will… what are you doing? Why are you giving that hard drive to them?!"

"It seems like you are naïve to the very end… I have been using you for my own end, Kaede."

"-!"

"The fact that I had to say "I love you", giggle at your childishness and coddle you as if you really are the subject of my affection makes me sick."

"W-W-William… you can't be-"

"I hate you, Kaede… I wish we never met each other so that I won't have to remember someone so disgusting as you are."

I stole all the data that Kaede collected from the strongholds in Old Osaka.

"We're done here… Phew! There's a lot of them in here, aren't they, Will?"

"Yeah…"

"Good thing that we got rid of all of them before they reached the place where Imamura-sensei and the other Kanbu officers are fighting at."

"Actually, there is one more left in here."

"Huh? Where? URK-!"

"Right here… That one is me."

"Will… why are you…?!"

"I told you already… you should've just quit and stayed beside Katsumi."

I stabbed Renjiro who was guarding a highway to the city and opened up the road for the reinforcements sent by Lady Aishi and Young master Keiji.

"William… why did you turn against us…?"

"I have found a reason to use this power for… Something far more noble and useful than the one spoken by the Sumeragi group."

"Kh… If you are going to kill me, I at least want you to hear this…"

"Go on. Don't make it too long."

"…Even if you have lost your way and come against us, I am proud of you."

I gained more and more power through the tutelage of the Gardeners and all three Heirs, especially Lady Himari who personally devoted her limited time just to make sure that I wouldn't lose my momentum.

Years passed and Lady Himari and her two siblings needed new bodies. With the limited knowledge of even our best cloning scientists, their bodies can only last for a few years and the memories that they can carry into their new bodies are limited.

"I would never forget you, William. Trust me in those words."

"I will, Lady Himari. I will do just that."

At the physical ages of 28, the three heirs were reborn in pre-pubescent cloned bodies… just like they have always done before.

"It is peculiar now that I have returned to such an age… we look like a father and daughter who are about to be parted."

"I apologize for asking to always rest on your lap, Lady Himari… But I can't feel at ease without it."

"Hehe… Don't worry, William. I am not bothered. After all, I must reward the one who has contributed the most to our cause, shouldn't I?"

That's right… I am the one who has done the most for our cause. That is something that I take great pride on.
