He decided the best thing to do was not question it.

It took longer than Todd had estimated, even traveling faster, to get to the depot. In the distance, there was the occasional pop and crack, but, with the sound of their horses’ hoofbeats overlaying other sounds, it was difficult to determine the exact direction they originated from. A few questioning glances at Nick confirmed to Todd, his mate’s hearing was no better at determining the source than Todd’s.

Nick’s loud gasp and exclamation of, “Holy crap! Shit!” followed a few seconds later by Obi sliding to a halt so fast he sat back on his haunches, had Todd pulling Arenite to a fast stop without even knowing why. Clouds of dust combined with clumps of mossy dirt were ejected upward and rained back down in his wake. As soon as the horse was standing still, Nick held both hands in the air and apart.

“What the—damn.” Todd imitated Nick’s actions. “We’re sentries.”
