  Back at the cottage, as we sat around and enjoyed our evening meal, it was the nicest day I’d had with other people in quite some time. With candles flickering, the fire roaring, and the cosy ambience of the lights from the Christmas tree twinkling away, a bottle of wine was opened, and we started sharing stories of years gone by.

  “I remember the time when you used to say to me and Emma that there were fairies at the bottom of the garden, and you had us looking for them for the best part of a few afternoons.” Tess chuckled toward Dawson, while sitting back and sipping her wine.

  “It kept you two out of trouble.” He winked, shooting us both a smile.

  “I missed way too much.” Elijah sighed, putting his arm around Tess.

  “It’s a pity that we hadn’t known you sooner,” I soothed.
