Zera, a teenage temple slave, is sent through an ancient portal at the urging of those who raised her. Thrust onto a technologically superior planet, Zera learns that her home-world is just one in an age-old coalition of worlds, even though her world has long been considered a dead planet. While learning to navigate an alien civilization that sees her as nothing more than a primitive, Zera encounters those who would do anything to help her succeed in her mission and those who would do anything to see that she fails. Not knowing the language, with no understanding of technology, Zera embarks on a mission to learn all she can to help her dying race. Along the way, she discovers more than she ever imagined about her home-world, her people, and herself; she may even find unexpected love.
