The Oak Table

An elderly man could be seen reading a folder containing details of a young girl on his large oak table. The tastefully decorated room he was in gave a sophisticated Victorian upper class study room feel. He seems very distracted with what he had read, even more so when he keep glancing over her pictures.

Grotesque was an understatement when used to describe her appearance as Rachael was a very deformed girl. Abandoned by her parents at an orphanage with no possibility for adoption, the matron consented in selling her off rather than facing her disgusting appearance daily when she was barely able to walk.

"Almost a year old, probably the youngest candidate we managed to obtained so far!" Sir Sigmud mumbled to himself.

"She'll be a good candidate. Her life's practically ended before it even begun. Poor girl..." A mature woman's voice could be heard coming from his desk-phone.

" I'm not too sure, Anna. It might be another failure. We aren't exactly a charity organization... "

"It'll be fine, Sigmund. Our research results shows that adaptability significantly increases the younger our test subjects are..."

"I've read your report on that. However it still concerns me as this is probably the most deformed candidate you've ever approved of!"

He was right. The little girl was blind in one eye with both her limbs were not well-developed and might not be able to function properly when she was of age. In addition, her flaky skin which required frequent medical attention to avoid excessive drying might caused cuts and resulting to bacterial infection. This girl was basically a ticking time bomb. No wonder the matron had consented as soon as Anna offered to take her from the orphanage.

"It'll be fine. You worry too much, Sigmund."

"Sigh... The decision ultimately belongs to you. Just don't regret it later if this one ends in another failure."

"She won't !"

Sigmund took an expensive looking fountain pen and signed on the papers in the folder, sighing again before putting the file away.

'Looks like another bar of gold to be thrown into the ocean...' He mentally noted to himself.
