1 In Between

"Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?" ~ The Hobbit, There and Back Again

"Where....? Where am I?" She thought. The girl opened her brown hazelnut eyes to see the sky was bursting with colours. Blue, purple, and green light spilled like a glass of coloured milk. She lifted her hand up to touch it. She stopped and stared at her hands, they were a smooth milk colour. The skin was firm and plump. She didn't know why she was staring at her hands. Maybe she doesn't believe they're there.

She slowly lifted herself up to a sitting position. She still stared at her hand with a blank expression. After a few  moments she slowly lowered her hand to her side. She looked down from her chest to her legs and feet. She saw that she was in a short white dress with blue butterfly ribbons and blue butterfly ruffles at the top. Her legs are covered by white leg stockings and black heels. She clicked her heels together childishly. "Hmmm. Who dressed me?" She asked herself. She had many questions running through her head. Where? What? When? How? Why? Going over and over in her brain  like a high speed train on a track.

She sighed, scratching her head in confusion. Not even the sky helped her confusion be ill at ease. She got up and dusted herself off. Her black curly hair bouncing up and down from her small movements. Her shoes clicking against the ground was deafening. She stopped in her movements and saw the ground was pure water. Reflected back at her was her own reflection.

A heart shaped face, long eyelashes framed by hazelnut eyes. Her hair dark as charcoal and curly at the end. On top of her head was a mini blue top hat with a stuffed white rabbit. She tilted her head in curiosity but just shrugged. She lifted her head and just saw a never ending landscape of lit sky's and water. She looked behind her and it was the same. "Where do I go?" She asked herself. Looking back and forth on what direction to take. "Hehe... you ask a lot of questions don't you?" Someone giggled. The girl was startled and stumbled back in in surprise. "W-who's there!?" She yelled back. The unknown voice giggled at the girl from nowhere.

The girl was getting scared. She turned her hard back and forth in a panic, trying to pinpoint the source of the giggling. Then she saw a lone figure far from her in the middle of this water wasteland. She wasted no time running towards that unknown figure. But no matter how far she ran, the further away the figure was. It continued to giggle at her mockingly. She was growing tired from the constant running and every time she placed a foot to the water a splitting headache comes around. She always has to stop and grasp her head in pain. Images of a girl in a most gruesome death keeps flashing into her brain that she wanted to just lay down and cry. "Is that me?" She asked herself. Stopping to rest.

"Well that all depends on you." The unknown person said. The girl shot her head up with a jolt and what lay before her eyes was a table decked out like a tea party. Green moss was covering the wooden table like a cloth. On top were towers of cakes and jams, tea pots singing with hot tea and chipped tea cups in place for seven occupants.

But no guests were present. This tea party looked like it hasn't seen any guests in years and yet everything is in place like it was set a few minutes ago. Her eyebrows move in confusion. "Why do I feel like we're in Alice in Wonderland?" She asked herself.

"You tell me? This is your mind after all." The unknown person giggled again. The girl looked at the head of the table that used to be unoccupied but now the chair was filled with a short girl. About four feet two inches high. Her hair was a light colour of pink but was covered with live butterflies that looked like they were pinned down. Her face was covered by a plain white mask with a painted smile. The outfit consists of a rainbow ruffle dress with an hourglass figure. She just sat there swishing around her tea cup filled with steaming hot tea. The girl slowly approached this figure with caution. The mask girl lifted her small hand to her mask in a chuckled motion.

"There's no need to be shy! Come have some tea." The masked girl motioned to a chair beside her. The chair moved by itself so the girl could sit down. The girl slowly reached to the chair and gracefully sat down whilst the chair tucked her into the table. "Now I know we're in Wonderland." She thought. The masked her poured her a cup of tea from a beautiful moonlight blue rose teapot. Earthy brown liquid poured out of the spout and into the tea cup without a single drop spilt. After the tea was served the mask girl stared or looked like she stared at the girl and waited for her to take a sip. The girl stared at her suspiciously. "Who are you?" She questioned with a stoic face. The masked girl chuckled like a dying cat.

"You asked so many questions!" Slamming her hand on the table so many times that the china clanged against her movements. She turned her neck in a turtle like motion and cocked her head to the side with a snap. "Let me ask you nosey rosie... who... are... you?" She stretches her sentence. The girl looked down at her tea cup, unable to look at this un-normal human being. She didn't have an answer to that. She looked deep into her mind but came out with nothing, not even a name. "Hmmm. You don't know, do you?" The mask girl sniggers, putting her neck back to its proper place. She lifted her tea and poured the contents down her mask. The hot liquid staining her dress and mask. The painted smile melting away into a crummy mess.

She placed her tea cup down delicately like a lady with her pinky up in the air and jumped up on the table. The girl jumped at her action, not really expecting it. "Oh well! Who cares! It doesn't matter anyway." She twirled I'm a circle without a care in the world. The girl pushed her chair back in anger. "Of course it matters! I don't know who I am or where I am! What the hell is this place!? What the hell are you!?"She shouted and pointed an accusing finger at the masked stranger. The masked stranger stopped and looked at her.

"Oh! Where are my manners. Twilight Star! At your service." Dramatically bowing at the girl. "And where are we, you may ask? We're in the inbetween." Spreading her arms in joy. Now the girl was even more confused. "What the heck is the inbetween?". "You don't know!? Why honey this is where everyone goes when they finish their journey!" Twilight gasped in disbelief. The girl didn't like where this was going. Her body shook uncontrollably. "W-what do you mean." She stuttered. Twilight walked over to the scared little girl and bent down to her face to face.

"Why... you're dead."
