Chapter 7

Charlotte's POV

While I was waiting in the room, Brianna approached me. Her gorgeous green eyes didn't have the gleam it had before nor did she dashed her eyelashes like she mostly does.

"I'm so sorry that I kept you waiting. It's all my fault. I swear I wasn't… conscious."

Conscious? Doesn't she know I was there?

However, I felt a tinge of compulsion to console her. I didn't know why I would ever do that, but seeing her in frustration melted me. Maybe because she looks so pretty even in distress that makes one empathise with her.

Brianna sat on the couch with her head resting on one of her hands. I don't know how to respond.

"Uhm…"

"Come, we should get back," Brianna suggested, trying to put a smile on her face.

"You told me we were going to your place but we went just to see him and now we're en route to the company?"

The salty smell of the sea has started diffusing away. I glanced out to see the skyscrapers sprinting backward. We're nearing Rochester.

"Oh! I don't think it would be necessary anymore. Everything is settled now." She reassured me with a gentle smile.

"Settled?"

I shifted from my seat. So, it went well?

"It went a bit awkward. I… will call you this evening after I talk to Jameson about you and further details about when you should join and other things. Okay?"

"Alright,"

I nodded. My eyes were wandering out of the window while my lips were in a straight line. My mind was partially into something.

Why did she do that with him unconsciously? Very strange of her to do. Maybe, they might be in love or something, but why in front of me? Was she drunk or something?

My eyes scanned Brianna while my body was leaning on my seat, slightly shifted towards the car window.

Nope. Then what? No funny games, I guess.

Oh-Charlotte! Think about the salary, the salary...

While I was sunk in these thoughts, I didn't know we had reached the destination until Brianna tapped on my shoulders.

"See you again!" said Brianna, moving her car.

I nodded bye and strode towards the company's entrance.

"Ms. Rudolph. I see you're late on your very first day?" said Mr. Matthew, Brianna's father and my senior manager. He sounded calm but his voice asked for a relevant answer.

"Sorry sir, this might sound weird but your daughter, Brianna, called me and asked me for a switch with her job--"

"A switch?" He said, rising from his chair, concerned about filling in his face. I stepped back.

Did I just say anything wrong?

"She said--maybe you should discuss this with her."

That would be good. I thought he knew it already.

"Why would she do that?"

His eyes were widened, cheeks were flushed and a drop of sweat trickled down the bridge of his nose. The sweet look on his face had faded away.

I wasn't expecting this.

He quickly searched for his phone and dialled some number and waited for the receiver to answer it. The tension in the room increased as Brianna became late in answering the call.

"Anna, did you just switch your job with someone?" He asked, maintaining the calmness in his voice.

After listening to her for a few seconds, he started again : "Why?"

Again, after listening to her for a few seconds, "Is that so?"

His voice decreased to a very basic level of calmness then.

"Are you sure?... Okay then. How long would it take?... Two months?... Fine… Okay, bye."

He turned his gaze at me after ending the call.

"So, we'll be working together after two months, right?"

I nodded nervously.

"She told me to tell you that you will have to join there by tomorrow itself. She'll call you by evening today to discuss some matters with you. Hope you have a good time at Miller's..." He said, smiling. This sudden change in him felt strange .

Will I be okay with this?

The next day, I quickly jumped from my bed and prepared for the rest of the things as fast as I could. I shouldn't be late, that was rule number one Brianna told me about Jameson. He hates people getting late for his business.

So I guess I have maintain my punctuality strictly

When I halted her car in the parking lot, a large and modern looking super structure stood sturdy in New York City. It was far more than the company I will be working for in two months. When I glared up, I felt my eyes burn due to the sunlight. I couldn't see the top end of the building.

Most people there looked as if they were the busiest people in the world, they were rushing in and out of the building, hopefully not bumping into each other. Everybody looked severely focused on their work. A stunning and different feature for the building that attracted her was the greenery. Different varieties of beautiful plants were grown in the facade, which made the building friendly.

God. Will I be good enough to work here?

I have a habit of first checking on the parking lot of the staff of a company. It left me astounded! There were only luxury cars everywhere, except mine!

Suddenly I realized that I had been wasting my time there as if I had gone to an amusement park. I immediately rushed to the entryway.

After I asked for the floor number at the CEO's office, I quickly got all my stuff ready. I ran into the elevator and quickly escaped to the fifteenth floor where I noticed a board showing "CEO'S office" and quickly rushed towards the direction.

I slowly opened the huge hardwood door to the grand office room of the CEO.

He was sitting in his comfy chair, glaring straight at me.

Oh no!
