22 Chapter 22: Idle conversation

It was a relief to have found that jumpsuit; it covered most of my body, and the gloves were perfect. I only wished I could find something to cover my face better than a ripped cloth. But beggars can't be choosers, and at least the cloak's obfuscation seemed to be working.

Although I must admit, the combination of a grey jumpsuit, brown boots, black gloves, and a dark blue cloak didn't quite mesh well, leaving me feeling rather conspicuous and somewhat like a character out of a dystopian tale. However, the group seemed to overlook my odd attire as I moved amongst them. Their focus shifted to my backpack, which I proudly displayed, brimming with books. Their visible shock was palpable as they inquired about my food supply. I casually replied that I had consumed it all.

Yet, their curiosity persisted, especially that of the man named Danni. He elaborated that his son attended college in the city, prompting me to explain that the bomb had struck dangerously close to the city center where the college was situated. Surprisingly, this revelation didn't seem to faze Danni, who, in turn, disclosed something that caught me off guard.

"Have you not been reading the newspaper before the bombs dropped?" Danni asked, prompting me to shake my head in response. He mirrored my gesture with a disappointed shake of his own head before launching into an explanation.

He elucidated how, in anticipation of the impending war, cities had implemented bunkers in crucial locations, such as schools, including colleges. According to him, his son likely had the opportunity to seek refuge as they had broadcasted a warning ten minutes prior to the bombing, alerting the nation of the impending disaster. Moreover, his son owned a radio, making it highly probable that he received the broadcast and hastened to the bunker for safety.

*Love your optimism hope you find your son*

My message was clear and supportive as I genuinely hoped this man finds his son and could live as long as possible in this shitty apocalypse.

"Thanks, and thank you for the heads up about the mutant beast," Danni said, eliciting a nod of gratitude from me. I studied Danni more closely, disregarding the oversized flannel and jeans that emanated a distinctly paternal vibe. Danni, by all appearances, was what would have been referred to as a Caucasian man in my previous world. His skin bore a light tan, and his hands, rough and calloused, bore the unmistakable signs of hard labor.

"Sadly, I might have to part ways with the group," Danni continued, his tone tinged with regret. "Our leader prefers to steer clear of danger whenever possible, which, though a conservative viewpoint, I can appreciate for everyone's safety." Danni said sounding genuinely sad to the point I would have accompanied him back to the city but I didn't feel like back tracking so he was on his own but that didn't stop me from writing a couple directions to avoid some of the denser area of beast.

Eventually, the group concluded their looting expedition and regrouped with the other teams, each boasting a similarly successful haul. As expected, inquiries about me ensued, to which I offered only selective responses. Fortunately, my answers proved sufficient to satisfy the group's curiosity, prompting them to leave me be as I engaged in conversation with Danni and the leader, Cain. Both expressed a keen interest in learning more about the city and its inherent dangers. I even divulged information about the looming threat of a massive horde of oozers, positioned a day or two away from the town.

Thus, I spent the night in the company of the group. Eventually, I found myself lying there, uncertain of what to do next, lost in idle contemplation.
