  My heart threatened to explode in my chest; this thing—this creature living inside of Dimitri—just called me mother?! He had to have been trying to get under my skin. He was trying to get a rise out of me, that bastard! But his eyes—

  "What was that?" I pressed, hoping he would crack his silent demeanor.

  Instead of answering, he ushered me further away. His arm wrapped around my back, pushing me in a door. He closed it quickly, standing between it and me. "It would serve our interests to keep far away from my son."

  His choice of words caught me off guard, my brain shooting back and forth. "Your son—I—" taking a deep breath, I tried again. "Why did it call me mother? Was he fucking with me? It's fucking creep—" The look on his face stopped me in my tracks.

  His face crumbled, a tear escaping his closed eyes. "It is—our child—our son…"
