Chapter 53

Both the Queen and Nerein said, “Yet?” with immense interest. Nerein’s eyes got brighter, bluer, giddy as horizons; he leaned in and kissed Peter squarely on the lips, swift and breathless and heart-pounding.

“Well,” Cade said, “we’ll definitely talk about that, too. Lyssa, you should meet Gwen and Rhys, they basically kept the whole inn running while I figured out how to be a decent human being, and you can have some of that cider before we show you around, and we’ll talk about tomorrow and meeting the King…”

“Lead me onward.” Lyssa looped an arm through Cade’s. “Gwen and Rhys, is it? Tell me about these magical cinnamon-honey roll-ups.”

The gathering moved toward The Bell’s common room; Peter had forgotten how to make his feet become unrooted from the spot. Nerein took a step, noticed the tug of their hands, came back. Kissed him again. “Are you all right?”

“No,” Peter managed. “I told the Queen I was a fisherman.”

“I’m fairly certain she knew.”
