Chapter 24

They walked down to the southernmost point of the town. The river foamed under the docks and roared away south. They watched a boat spin and bob on the current. Paul was sure it was going to be torn apart when it suddenly righted itself and sped off out of sight.

"The first bit is the tricky part, gentlemen."

Paul looked to see a middle-aged sailor standing next to them.

"We need to get on a boat," Daniel said.

"The only ones who ride on my boat are slaves," the sailor said.

"Your boat?" asked Daniel.

"I'm the Captain."

"I'll go as a slave," Paul said. "My friend rides as a free man."

"No!" Daniel said, "You can't do that."

"It's OK, Daniel," Paul said. "I'm sure it will work out."

"No..."

"It's either this or you go home."

"You come home with me."

"I can't, remember? I have no home to go to."

Daniel stared at Paul for a long time, then he sighed. "OK, have it your way."

"I haven't agreed to this insanity," the captain said.
