Chapter 75 - Maya

"Did she come back home last night?" asks Carter while eating his breakfast.

"Who?"

"Liya."

"Oh yes, she did. She was upset, though."

"She's a young woman, Maya, she doesn't understand the complexities of settling down in life," says Carter looking up from his plate.

"She is young, but she knows exactly what she needs, Carter. Young does not mean immature."

"I'm just trying to get her into a stable position in life."

"What makes you think she isn't already? Or that she wouldn't later?" asks Maya, pouring herself some milk.

"I don't know, I just have this compulsive need to-"

"Control her," says a voice from behind.

"HELP her," replies Carter.

Mae pulls a chair and sits beside him. "Dad, if you think that's help, I hate to break it to you–isn't. Why are you so grim in every conversation with her?"

"Because she's like me. She won't stop until she gets what she wants. I need to be tough with her."

"Do you realise how contradictory you sound right now?"
