Chapter One: Broken Mind

The room was silent except for the steady hum of the overhead fluorescent lights. Detective Sarah Johnson sat at her desk, staring blankly at the whiteboard in front of her. It was covered in photographs, witness statements, and a map of the crime scene.

Sarah had been working on the James Wilson case for weeks, but she still couldn't shake off the feeling that she was missing something. Wilson, a wealthy businessman, had been found dead in his office. There were no signs of forced entry, and the security cameras had been disabled.

Sarah's phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. It was her partner, Williams.

"Hey, have you made any progress on the Wilson case?" Williams asked.

Sarah sighed. "No, I feel like we're missing something," she said.

"Well, we got a new lead," Williams said. "Robert Thompson just turned himself in. He says he killed Wilson."

Sarah's heart skipped a beat. "What's his motive?" she asked, her mind racing.

"He says Wilson ruined his life," Williams replied. "He won't say anything more until he talks to you."

Sarah grabbed her coat and headed to the interrogation room. When she arrived, she found Thompson sitting at the table, his hands folded in front of him.

"Mr. Thompson, can you tell us why you confessed to killing James Wilson?" Sarah asked, trying to keep her voice calm.

Thompson looked up at her, his eyes dark and haunted. "He ruined my life," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

"How did he ruin your life?" Sarah asked, leaning forward.

"He took everything from me," Thompson said, his voice rising. "My job, my family, my house. He destroyed everything I had."

Sarah knew she had to tread carefully. "Can you give us more details, Mr. Thompson?" she asked.

Thompson took a deep breath. "I used to work for Wilson. I was a sales executive at his company. But when the economy took a downturn, Wilson laid off half the staff, including me. I couldn't find a job, and I lost everything. My wife left me, and I had to move back in with my parents. I was desperate."

Sarah listened intently, her mind racing. She had heard similar stories before, but something about Thompson's confession didn't feel right.

"Mr. Thompson, can you tell us more about the night of the murder?" she asked.

Thompson looked away, his expression unreadable. "I don't remember much," he said. "I was drunk. I just remember going to Wilson's office and confronting him. And then...everything went black."

Sarah knew she had to dig deeper. "Did you have any weapons with you?" she asked.

Thompson shook his head. "No, I didn't bring anything with me."

Sarah exchanged a look with Williams. She knew there was more to this case than met the eye.

"We'll need to investigate further, Mr. Thompson," Sarah said, standing up. "In the meantime, you'll be held in custody until we can get to the bottom of this."

Thompson nodded, his eyes downcast. Sarah and Williams left the room, deep in thought. There was something about Thompson's confession that didn't add up, and they were determined to find out what it was.
