Breaking This New World; …Might be Harder Than I Thought

I threw myself up as fast as I could, but it was probably pointless. I don't know how long I've been laying there but…

"Urgh"

I was never particularly good with gross things in my previous world, so this I nearing the tipping point for me. The waves of odour are certainly not helping me keep my lunch down either.

The odour…

Well it's certainly not nice that it smells, there is a bright side to this. If it smells strong it's fresh, if it's fresh then someone passed by recently. If someone passed by recently then it's very likely that it will happen again.

"I guess I should try to find somewhere to wash off…"

Looking around the road appears to be travelling alongside a forest, with a gently sloped plains on the other side. Since it is going downhill there is probably some water at the bottom somewhere.

After walking down my hypothesis was proved to be true, and I was rewarded by a nice bath in a mucky swamp-like pond. It's better than manure but still… I miss my shower already.

After returning I began walking the road. Thankfully I was able to see the hoof prints left by whoever passed by so I could travel the same direction. Hopefully I can catch up and hitch a ride.

I assumed I had some distance to cover so I fiddled with my system to pass the time while I walked.

Ambling along I learned several things: First of all I think the "deities" that made this system just half-ass copied a modern rpg game menu. This kind of makes sense, I doubt they care much about the people living in this world or the ones they summon.

Thanks to it being a game menu clone I have access to a couple things I'm pretty sure I shouldn't. The first thing I noticed is that for some reason there is an audio tab in the settings menu. As you would expect… it works. This would be cool on its own but looking it over… I think I see something useful.

Multiple sliders to adjust different types of audio, being ambiance, dialogue, a few others and then… passive and hostile creatures.

If you don't know why I'm excited about this it basically means I now have super hearing. While ordinarily enhanced hearing would be annoying with the noise being too much, with this menu I can not only increase the volume of hostiles but also mute ambient sounds to be able to hear more important things more clearly.

*crack*

See? I easily heard the sound of a stick breaking in the woods, normally it would be drowned out by birds and even if I did hear it I wouldn't think anything of it. With the huge sound that stick made I can be sure that it was actually something that posed a threat!

Wait a minute.

I take off as fast as I can, not even looking back. I don't need to actually, since I can clearly hear the sound of something very big behind me. I can be certain that it's something dangerous too, since an ordinary stick sounding like a whip cracking is definitely not normal. After a short distance the noise had faded though… whatever it was I guess it wasn't very fast.

I take a peek over my shoulder and…

Down the road is a slime hopping across.

I hate this place.

At least I know that it will be hard for things to sneak up on me.

I grab a suitable club from the edge of the woods and walk back, after the embarrassment that thing has put me through… there's no way I'm letting it live.

I'm not stupid though, I'm obviously going to check it's level and stats. Considering all the resemblances to games I've come across it could very well be an enemy from a late game area. If that's the case I may stand no chance, and I wouldn't put it past that "goddess" to summon me in somewhere dangerous either.

As I was walking before I found out that by thinking the word "observe" you can analyze the environment. How original, goddess. Still I'm glad to be able to do it, since because of that I'm able to easily tell that the slime is level 42.

Since I'm level five starting out that means that I'll be able to easily defea- wait 42?

I freeze for a second, and a second too long. It spotted me.

"Oh shit"

"Well it was moving slowly before so I can probably outru-"

It disappeared.

I hear a whooshing sound and… splat. It covered 400 of the 600 meters separating us in a single leap.

I, now more than ever, realize how much I was right about not wanting to be sent to a fantasy world.

The chase began. Well "chase" might not be the best way to describe it, since that implies both parties are relative to each other in speed.

This… was more like dodgeball.

After it's second jump it landed ten or so meters away from me, despite my best efforts to sprint away.

Then it started an incredibly obvious telegraph for an attack.

Even still, I have never been so close to death.

I moved instinctively, maybe from all those hours of games? Or maybe just from survival instincts. Either way It was a little too close for comfort, because although I had gotten my body out of the way, when I looked where the slime shot past me I noticed…

My arm was gone.

I think my body didn't know what had just happened because it didn't hurt right away. I didn't have time to think about it though.

Another attack telegraph.

I dove to the side, the slime shot just over my head like a bullet.

I don't really know what I was thinking at this point but after barely dodging the next few attacks, and feeling more and more lightheaded from blood loss, I tried to do anything I could to survive. This foolishly included begging for my life. (Yes I begged to a slime stfu)

"Wait! Please stop!"

It attacked again

"Listen to me please! Time out!"

It didn't stop

"Give me a break! Stop! Time out! Pause!"

It… stopped?
