Chapter 70

It wasn’t Mecken, whom Eddie had to assume was neck-deep in dreaded lessons, but a tech from Collins’ team. The tech was on his way to the Barrier, he told Eddie, and a side-jaunt past Kaeva’s wouldn’t be too far out of his way.

“But I’m not going up to the house,” the tech said. “I got a family to care of. I’m not about to risk getting my face melted off. Hell, I’m not really sure why they figure you should.”

Eddie hadn’t replied. In all honesty, the tech’s attitude pissed him off. While he could have launched into a lengthy monologue about how everyone obviously misunderstood what Kaeva was all about, he doubted it would do a lick of good. Besides, he was tired, and there were already too many thoughts buzzing through his head.

So he walked from the main pathway to the house, which ended up being way, waymore of a walk than he would have hoped for after a day’s work. By the time he reached Kaeva’s cabin, the sun was going down, and he was ready to crash.
