"Sam?" She inquired, and Lisa nodded at her.

"Yes, it's him." She clarified, and Diana stayed silent for a few moments before asking her to pick up the call.

She answered it and put it on speaker so Diana could also hear whatever the person was going to say.

"Lisa! Hello Lisa." The deep voice of a man resounded, and Lisa parted her lips to respond.

"Sam, is there a problem?" She went straight to the point, as she didn't have much likeness for the young man.

"Is Diana with you?" Sam asked, and she raised her head to look at Diana.

Diana bit her lower lip and nodded at her, wanting to know what could be the problem.

"Yes, she is here with me."

"Give her the phone." With no emotion in his voice, Sam ordered, and although a bit displeased by such a rude tone, Lisa handed the phone over to Diana.

Diana received it from her and moved it close to her ears.

"Sammy." A lovely smile emerged on her face as his name rolled out of her tongue, but Sam, who seemed to be in a bad mood, scoffed in irritation.

"Please don't call me that, it irritates me." He remarked, and, quite taken aback by his words, Diana's eyes blinked rapidly.

"Huh? Sam, is...everything okay?" Unsure of why he was being mean to her, she asked, and Sam scoffed behind slight laughter.

"Does it sound like everything is fine? Of course, nothing is fine!" He replied, and Diana's brows furrowed.

"Why... is that? Did someone make you mad?" She pried, and Sam stayed silent for a few moments before letting out a deep breath.

"Diana...this might come as a shock to you, but...I am breaking up with you. I have figured out that it won't work between the both of us, so I am breaking off our engagement." He blurted out and as though struck by a knife, Diana staggered back and almost fell if not for Lisa immediately grabbing onto her wrist and pulling her up.

"Sam... you're not serious, are you? You're joking, right? " She asked in a cracked voice, and Sam went silent the instant he heard the pain in her voice.

"Sam! Say something! You're joking with me, right? Right?" She questioned, almost breaking down, and a deep sigh exited Sam's nose.

"Diana, look, sometimes things just don't work out in the way we want them to. I don't love you. I mean, I have tried to and found myself unable to do so. I even set up the engagement to know if it would work, but it's just impossible. Maybe I just dated you out of self-pity because thinking of us together now irritates me. It's disgusting. I really can't imagine myself with someone insane. That would be a huge disgrace to my family." He clarified and, completely shattered by those words, Diana breathed heavily as painful tears began to well up in her eyes.

"Sam... why? Why are you saying these horrible things to me? Wh-what did I do wrong? Where did I mess up to cause you to say these hurtful words to me?" She implored in a painful tone, and Sam chuckled softly, showing no tinge of remorse or guilt.

"Hurtful words? Those are not hurtful words, Diana. They are simply the truth, which you can't seem to accept. You are mad and the world knows it. So, it's really selfish on your part if you expect anyone to be with you." He replied, and Daina became stunned.

"Sam, you call a woman a woman, speaking to you like a sane, normal human being, insane." She chuckled softly in disbelief, and Sam sneered.

"Whether you believe it or not, you're not in any way sane. And yes, you're probably gonna be single for the rest of your life. Oh wait, there is no probability here. You're definitely gonna be alone for the rest of your life. So I am not sorry in any way for what I said to you. The bitter truth hurts."

He sighed deeply, and Diana's grip on the phone tightened. "So...I am that worthless that you had to break up with me over a phone...that is not even mine? I am so worthless! that you couldn't even break up with me in person, properly, like you ought to have!"

"Yes! Yes, Diana! You are so worthless that I didn't bother to take you out because I didn't want to be seen with you. It's a huge disgrace to me!" He yelled at her, now getting a bit mad, and Diana slowly nodded her head.

"So, that's why you never took me out or go anywhere with me? That's why you always pretend like you don't know me in front of your friends." She sniffed as she found herself about to break into tears.

"Yes, that's the reason. You are not worthy of me, neither do you deserve me." Sam replied, and she went silent for a few seconds.

"Then why did you date me? Why did you lie that you loved me for a whole fucking year?!" She asked, and Sam broke into laughter.

"Hmm, let's see. Maybe it's because I found it fun. You're like a circus clown to me, so I enjoyed using you and watching you act for me." He replied with a slight chuckle, and now furious to the bone, Diana proceeded to respond to his words, but he immediately cut the call, giving her no chance to do so.

Diana slowly brought the phone down from her ear and, with trembling hands, she handed it over to Lisa.

"Diana, are you okay?" Lisa inquired in deep concern, but Diana simply smiled at her and turned around, then walked away towards the fridge in the kitchen.
