Chapter 14
Quentin was as good as his word, and the two of them used Quentin’s utility trailer to haul a few loads of furniture to the house. When everything was situated, he thanked Quentin and Nate, who’d come along to help, then headed for the nearest Walmart to stock up on household items, including cleaning supplies. He devoted the next week to cleaning, painting, and finally setting up housekeeping. He was a little shocked at the size of the deposits he had to leave with the city utility company and the telephone company.
Late Friday afternoon he was planning to relax and do nothing for the rest of the evening. Never much of a drinker, he’d purchased a bottle of decent wine and was about to open it when his cell phone rang.
“Hello.”
“Hi, Chris. It’s me, Irv.”
“Irv, old buddy. How the heck are you? For that matter, where the heck are you?”
“I’m great, and I’ve got a weekend pass. I’m at the downtown transfer station right now, waiting for the bus that will take me close to the baths.”
