“It was something hanging out there to be dealt with. We decided—actually, it was Mickey’s idea—that we were both going to attempt some sort of reconciliation with our families this year. In my case, it was easy, because my aunt and the cousin I just sold this house to happened to visit while I was in the hospital last month. As far as Mickey’s family goes, if doors are slammed in his face this time, so to speak, he’ll write them off for good.”

Mitch’s secretary came into the office with a handful of documents. “Here you go, boss,” she said, and handed him two sets of paperwork. “Original executed documents and the requested number of copies.”

“Thank you, Marjorie,” Mitch said.

“That’s what you pay me for, boss,” she said, and left the office.

WHEN MICKEY CAME home from work that evening, Chris led him into their den and handed him some documents.
