BEING A VICTIM

As I stand before the mirror, I feel proud to look at myself. I feel proud when I realize that no one could stop me from achieving my goals not even by the sinister ploy of our so called society.

To be born as a girl is a big deal because of all the differentials and restrictions that we have to face.

In a country like India, people are afraid to have a girl child because of all the possibilities of their daughter being a victim of some unnatural happening and this is true.

This happens in the 20th century as well.

While growing up I had heard stories of girls/ women suffering from violence of various kinds from their male counterpart. This made me anxious.

When I used to ask people the reason for such happening, they would instantly blame the girl regarding their way of dressing, talking, walking and all the nonsensical stuff.

There were news flashing constantly about women getting raped, teased. This had become a regular phenomenon but all people cared about was pointing the flaws and the possible mistakes made by the women and totally ignoring the absurd behaviour of men.

When I turned 11, I was brought back to my home after 3 years.

My home was no different neither was the thinking of people. It was the same house, the same society, the same people and the same mentality shared by people. this didn't surprise me though. I guess I was already prepared for this.

As I think about those days, I feel so proud of my parents who noticed no difference between me and my brother. The range of opportunities I got was no different from his.
