A Canadian geologist returns to Africa after ten years to resume prospecting for deposits of coltan, an essential mineral for the manufacture of cell phones and other uses in electronics, whose consumption is increasing exponentially in the world. Alisha was sitting on a large sofa incalculable but in perfect condition, sitting in front of a similarly”sized coffee table waiting for Federica to personally serve her tea, while she served herself coffee. Both women had been close and inseparable friends since Alisha had settled with her father in Venice ten years ago.

Both shared a love for the artistic treasures of Venice as well as an interest in the history of the city and its people. Federica was part of that diffuse Venetian aristocracy descended from the patriciate that in times of the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia had had the sum of the political, military and commercial power of the city, in its heyday from the 12th century. That patriciate was made up of the families of the main overseas merchants and ship owners in whose hands was trade with the East, the basis of the city's prosperity and its importance within Christianity and Europe at that time.
