POV of Klaus, Soldier

''So Klaus, are you absolutely sure you want to retire voluntarily, you have been one of my best officers and your experience will be required later and there will be many more opportunities for promotion when the time comes'' said my commander Friedrich von Roon.

''Yes, Herr Roon, I think my time has come, I have served since the religious war began, since I was a teenager, it is time to put away the pike and crossbow and try to have a family, the king will need men for his future wars, I am just an old man'' I said a little nervous.

Friedrich von Roon took out some papers that had all my service information for the last few years and gave a sigh after reading them.

''Twenty-two years of service in your majesties armies, seven as a private, five as a corporal, six as a sergeant and the last four as a captain, impeccable service... if I offer you promotion to Oberst-Lieutenant over your own tercio although it will only have ten percent of its full strength, but you will receive the salary due and I will let you choose all your officers, would you consider staying?'' said Friedrich very serious looking at me fixedly.

''Ah...I appreciate the gesture...but I am tired of military life...don't get me wrong I appreciate everything I have learned in my years of service...I just consider that I want to do other things before I die...have children...I don't have much time left if I get to be forty years old it will be very lucky Herr Roon'' I said with an apologetic tone

''Damn... well, I understand it I know what it is, it's hard for me to understand it, but from your point of view in quite valid, I know I will live to be over two hundred years old, if someone doesn't kill me, but you friend... let's forget about that, well by decree of his royal majesty king Wilhelm von Hohenzollern every soldier that retires will receive three gold dragons per year of military service completed and one extra dragon for each military rank... in your case six dragons klaus'' said Roon doing mathematics in his notebook

''One hundred and thirty-two golden dragons were due to you as payment for all your years of service to the kingdom, a small fortune for anyone, the westerosis consider that with three dragons you can live a good life for the year, you could guarantee a good life for your family until the next generation if you simply retire and do nothing else''

''But, considering your services under my orders, your skill, your actions, that you always obeyed my orders, no matter if I threw you into hell itself and you advised me when I was a novice in my position I will give you the same amount from my own pocket, as a reward for all I put you through while you served me'' said Herr Roon smiling a little bit

''I thank you from the bottom of my heart, Herr Roon, I admit I never liked that you always asked us to train, but it made a lot of difference when we had to fight, after enduring your hellish training'' I said smiling

''The intention was always to protect you guys, I wish I could give you more, but... you know, I'm not rich enough to offer you more... but I can give you a house in one of the new, cities that are being built, you could save yourself some golden dragons, so tell me, tumbleton, ashford, the new capital, the mander port city, oldtown, you name it and I get you a place you can call home'' von Roon said preparing to write orders

''I would like to live in the new capital, I suppose there will be a lot of work I could do'' I replied to von Roon.

''Well... let me do... here, give it to the mayor of the city and he will know to treat you with respect, he will give you the house you ask for and .... why not a business establishment... I will talk to the king''said Frederick von Roon handing me the paper with the orders while he was laughing

'Roon laughing?, wow, I'm not dreaming?'

''Well I guess it's goodbye, go to the quartermaster officer and collect your reward... and please get out of here, these are military installations and no civilians are allowed, ha, ha, ha'' laughed von Roon showing me the exit of his tent.

'Weird...'

After my conversation my former commander quickly went to visit the quartermaster officer who was holding a rather heavy bag full of gold and a medal that was being given to all retired soldiers.

In order to prove they were soldiers and a way to show that we are Prussians and not Westerosis who learned our language trying to impersonate us which was the last tactic of the rebels, although their accent was terrible.

Only a fool would believe that someone with such a terrible German could pass himself off as a Prussian, but something that characterizes the Westerosis is that they believe a lot in rumors and those who pretended to be Prussian soldiers did their best to commit serious crimes.

I counted the coins, it was more gold than they had ever given me, even more when they gave me a year's pay in advance when I was recruited.

I had taken a difficult step, but I had served more than half of my life in the army and I really wanted to change the routine before my time among the living ended, no matter how tempting the proposal Roon had given me was, I wanted to have a family and dedicate myself to another business.

With the knowledge, I learned in the army I could do a multitude of things, shoemaker, carpenter, baker and seamstress, were skills I had to learn if I wanted to keep up with the army, with my promotions it was necessary for me to learn to read and write and although I am not as good as a nobleman I can safely say that I could work in something related to numbers.

I decided I wanted to say goodbye to some friends before I left and went to one of the taverns we frequented because it was one of the few that suited our taste buds and served food that was familiar to us

''So old klaus is leaving the camp, I thought you would die at the post'' said one of my former subordinates

''Because I thought the war was never going to end, I had already psyched myself up to die for the sake of fatherland, but eventually it never happened and now that there is finally ''peace'', I can try to do other things,'' I said while drinking some beer

''Well, it's not like it's interesting to fight the rebels either, the Finns are chasing them like mice and if they need the use of muscle they call in the Teutons, so it's understandable that you got bored'' said a captain

''For one thing the Finns get paid twice or even three times as much as we do, let them do all the work, we get to rest once in a while, that's not bad either'' said a sergeant laughing

''At least that grouch Roon let you off, I thought he would force you to stay at the post'' said another one of my former subordinates

''He offered me a promotion using my company, as a base for a new tercio, I admit it was very tempting, he gave me plenty of liberties, but finally, I decided to proceed with my plan'' I said leaving the empty mug of my beer.

some of my former fellow captains almost had beer running out of their noses.

''*Cof**cof*are you kidding me you turned down a promotion, it's the dream we've all had, to lead our own tercio, besides it wouldn't have been hard for you to acquire a knighthood, you'd only have to suck up to Roon and he'd probably get you knighted in some order'' said a surprised captain.

''A lot of work for that, we all know very well what kind of person Roon is, he doesn't give away anything that you didn't earn without hard work, he reached into his pocket and rewarded me personally and that should be enough, I have enough gold to never work again'' I said while concentrating on eating

''Ahh...and now who will calm Roon down when he has a rage attack...since he took over the plantation construction project he has been so focused on making efficiency prime in everything, one can find farmland from Highgarden to horn hill with our farming system, if this keeps up I wouldn't be surprised if the plantations come to oldtown'' a sergeant said after sighing

''Well, no, although it doesn't seem like a bad idea to retire, collect our pay and rest... for my part I'll keep hoping that when we start recruiting I'll get promoted'' said a captain after drinking all his beer.

''When hell freezes over or when Roon really smiles, I don't know which one is more unlikely'' said a sergeant trying to hold back his laughter.

We all burst into laughter.

The beer began to flow among us like rivers and also the food because we were celebrating and nobody knows when we would see each other again, since those of us who know the soldier's job, from one day to another everything can end, the man who lives by the sword dies by the sword.

''You remember... you remember, ha, ha, ha, ha... you remember... when klaus almost got killed because... ha, ha, ha... he slipped on the mud'' said a rather drunk sergeant who could hardly contain the laughter

''HA, HA, HA, HA.... true, I think Klaus was almost scared shitless that time... ha, ha, ha, ha, but the knight who wanted to kill him was the dead one, the idiot managed to knock him into the mud with him and beat him to death with a rock''said one of my drunken subordinates.

We started to tell our stories of battles, the most glorious and also the most terrible, moments close to death where we escaped by very little, casually we do that with the recruits so they don't make our mistakes always looking to prepare them and improve their chances of survival.

But on this occasion it was simply to make fun of each other, our reactions, the scared faces or when Roon simply sent us to clean the latrines because we didn't attend a training or showed lack of discipline.

Finally, we finished our little meeting and with a lot of trouble they returned to their barracks while I headed to the city searching for choosing my new home

The capital under construction or Königsstadt as most of the soldiers began to call the fortress that loomed over the connection of the mander and the goldengrove river, dominated the two rivers that connected the reach.

The architects used the rivers to fill in their moats, literally the double wall where the king resided had become an island, which could only be entered by the drawbridges and the bridge that the Targaryens had built to reach Highgarden, since no army could fill in the nearly thirty meters deep rivers and the northern channel.

After I stood like a fool watching the construction of that fortress I looked to the south, crossing the river was the port where all the products that entered the mander were received and it is the place where thousands of products are moved every day and it has presented a constant expansion, since many of the veterans have begun to settle in the area.

The mander was a very wide river, almost three kilometers wide in the widest areas, exactly where the rivers join, the only bridge in the area is made of the black stone of the Valyrians when they started the construction of roads and bridges to join what they conquered.

That is the only bridge that we did not demolish, the engineering was deemed adequate for the moment, and the king did not want to destroy it, although there is a clear desire to make a new one to allow larger ships to sail the mander, to make the voyages more lucrative.

'Well, where the hell is the mayor'
