chapter 4

Mark found himself perched atop a high-rise building, the cityscape sprawling out beneath him. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the urban landscape. The cool breeze tousled his hair as he gazed at the city.

His phone vibrated in his pocket once again, signaling another call from Amber. He sighed, torn between the desire to answer and the new responsibilities he now carried.

Mark's mind raced with conflicting emotions. He felt frustrated, not just at the persistent calls but at the tangled web of revelations that had reshaped his world. The responsibilities of being a hero clashed with the desire for a semblance of a normal life. Yet, the knowledge of his father's true identity and the impending threat of the Viltrum empire added to the grim picture, making for an ugly piece of art.

Mark stared at the city, its lights shimmering like distant stars, and couldn't help but feel a sense of isolation despite being surrounded by millions of people.

The weather was mild, with a gentle breeze carrying the scent of the city and a few clouds painting the sky in hues of pink and orange. It was the kind of evening that, under different circumstances, Mark might have spent with Amber, enjoying himself on a date.

As he debated whether to answer Amber's call, a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts. "Hey there, Mark." Eve floated down beside him, her red hair catching the last rays of the setting sun.

"Hey, Eve," Mark said, greeting her with a half-smile. "What brings you here?"

Eve looked at him with a knowing expression. "You've got that look. The 'world on my shoulders' look Wanna talk about it?"

Mark hesitated for a moment, glancing at his buzzing phone. "It's just... everything's changed, you know? I—dad came up with an idea for training, but I don't know if I'm really ready to go through with it." He wanted to say more, but he would leave that decision to his dad. The last thing they needed was more problems just because he couldn't keep his mouth shut for once.

Eve nodded sympathetically. "Change is never easy, especially when it's this much all at once. Training with your dad, huh? Sounds intense. But hey, you're Invincible, right? You've handled some crazy stuff already."

Mark managed a small laugh. "Yeah, but this is different. It's not him I'm worried about." At least he would like to think so. "You remember those green aliens that attacked us a few days ago? Well, my dad thinks we should go to their dimension and train there."

Eve's eyes widened slightly, registering the unexpected proposal. "Whoa, seriously? training in their dimension? That's a bold move. Didn't they die of old age or something?"

Mark shrugged, a hint of uncertainty in his expression. "My dad thinks their time flows differently, like, a day here could be years there. So, if we train for a few days on Earth, it could be equivalent to years of training in that dimension. It's supposed to make us stronger faster."

But that was exactly the problem; you just needed to think about the implications for a few seconds, ignoring the fact that they seemed hostile and outright cruel. If their leader was anything to go by, they could even spend decades there before finding a way back.

Eve's eyebrows raised in surprise. "That's... ambitious. And risky. Training for days but potentially spending years in another dimension? Your dad's really pushing the boundaries, isn't he?" She tensed up just imagining it; they could even die of old age before being able to make it back.

Mark nodded, looking out at the city lights. "Yeah, and that's not even the whole picture. He's got this whole thing about protecting Earth from—uh, aliens?" He got too into it and almost spoke about Viltrum.

Eve's eyes narrowed slightly, catching the brief hesitation in Mark's words. "Aliens? Like, more than just the green ones we faced?"

Mark sighed, realizing he had nearly slipped up. "Yeah, something like that. He's worried about a bigger threat from space. Thinks we need to be prepared." He fidgeted ever so slightly. "That's right! He even mentioned something about forming his own team to fight against the threat."

Eve studied Mark's face, sensing there was more to the story. While that last bit of information was eye-catching, no, because it was that noteworthy, she ignored it for now. "Mark, you're not telling me everything. What's going on?" Not one to be outspoke, she ignored the bait altogether.

Mark hesitated, grappling with the urge to confide in Eve. She had been a trusted friend and ally, and part of him longed to share the burden of these secrets. Yet, the weight of his father's caution and the potential consequences held him back.

"It's just... complicated. There's more going on than I can explain right now. Dad's been through a lot, and he's trying to protect us, protect Earth. But the details... I'm not supposed to reveal them yet; classified stuff, you know?"

Eve sighed, realizing the difficulties Mark was experiencing. "Don't bother, Mark. Your dad's got his reasons, and you've got yours for keeping it quiet. I get it, though; I wouldn't want to piss off your dad either."

Mark appreciated Eve's understanding, and the weight of his unspoken burdens eased slightly in her presence. "Thanks, Eve. It's just a lot to process. And, well, Amber keeps calling. I don't even know what to do about her."

Eve offered a sympathetic smile. "Relationships are tough, especially when there are secrets involved. Maybe you should talk to her and let her in on what you can. She might surprise you with how understanding she can be."

Mark nodded, a conflicted expression on his face. "Yeah, you're probably right. I just... I don't want her to get hurt because of all this, you know?"

Eve placed a comforting hand on Mark's shoulder. "You can't control everything, Mark. But being honest and open, at least to a certain extent, can go a long way. Trust your instincts; you'll figure it out."

Mark took a deep breath, glad to know another one besides his dad had his back. "Thanks, Eve. I guess I should take that call now. And then figure out how to talk to my dad about this whole other dimension training thing."

Eve gave him an encouraging nod. "You got this, Mark. And if you ever need someone to talk to or just kick some villains' ass with, you know where to find me."

Mark managed a genuine smile. "Thanks, Eve. I appreciate it." With that, he reached for his phone and finally answered Amber's persistent calls

Amber's voice echoed through the phone, a mix of frustration and concern evident. "Mark, where have you been? I've been calling you non-stop. We had plans, remember?"

Mark winced, regret tugging at him. "Amber, I'm sorry. Something came up, and I lost track of time."

There was a moment of silence, and Mark could practically feel the tension through the phone. "Mark, this is the third time this week. I get that you have your own life, but it feels like you're avoiding me. Is there something you're not telling me?"

Mark sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know, and I hate that I keep doing this. It's just... things are so hectic at home, and I'm trying my best to balance everything. You know how much you mean to me, right?"

Amber sighed on the other end, her tone softening slightly. "Mark, it's not just about today. It feels like you're not keeping your promises, and it's starting to get to me. I need to know that I can rely on you."

Mark nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "You're right, Amber. I need to do better, and I promise I will. Maybe we can reschedule for tomorrow? I'll make it up to you."

Amber hesitated before responding, "I don't want empty promises, Mark. I want actions. If you say you'll be there, then be there. It's that simple."

"I understand," Mark said, a tinge of regret in his voice. "I'll make it up to you, Amber, I swear."

There was another pause before Amber finally sighed. "Okay, Mark. But this can't keep happening. I need to know that when you say something, you mean it."

"I get it, Amber," Mark replied sincerely. "I'll do better. Tomorrow, I promise." From the corner of his eye, he could see Eve wince.

Amber sighed again, a mixture of frustration and resignation. "Fine, tomorrow. But this is your last chance, Mark."

Mark felt a knot tighten in his stomach at Amber's ultimatum. He knew he had to make a genuine effort to prioritize their relationship and keep his promises. "I won't let you down again, Amber. Tomorrow, I'll make it right. I promise."

Amber's response was a cautious, "Okay, Mark. I hope so. I care about you, but we need to have a serious talk about what's been going on. Tomorrow, no excuses."

"Thanks, Amber. I'll talk to you tomorrow," Mark said, feeling a mix of relief and determination. He ended the call, knowing that he couldn't put off the conversation any longer.

Eve watched as Mark navigated the conversation with Amber, catching glimpses of the heated exchange. It was a situation she had seen play out many times in the lives of heroes—balancing personal relationships with the demands of a superhero's life was never easy.

Eve, who had been patiently waiting nearby, approached Mark with a sympathetic expression. "Tough conversation?"

Mark ran a hand through his hair, his shoulders slumping. "Yeah, you could say that. I keep messing up plans, missing dates. It's just hard to balance everything."

Eve floated closer, offering a supportive smile. "Being a hero comes with its own set of challenges. But it's important to make time for the people who matter to you. They're the ones who keep you grounded, and if that doesn't work, then at least come clean and either finish it or reveal your secret identity, not be a jackass and lead her on."

Eve was surprised when Mark, after staying silent for a while, started floating and muttered. "I guess I'll have to end it then."

Eve blinked, not expecting Mark's sudden decision. "Wait, end what?"

Mark looked at Eve with a mix of determination and resignation. "My relationship with Amber. It's not fair to her if I keep letting her down. I need to be honest about myself. Maybe it's better if we're not together." He would make it up to her by ending this farce tomorrow.

Eve's expression softened as she understood the weight of Mark's choice. "Mark, are you sure about this? Ending a relationship is a big decision. Maybe you can talk to her and explain what's been going on. She might understand."

Mark sighed. "I've been trying to balance it all, but I keep failing. She deserves someone who can give her the time and attention she deserves. And right now, that's not me." He ruffled his hair in frustration. "Besides, what would you think if your boyfriend suddenly aged enough to be your dad?" He finally decided to accept his dad's proposal to go to another dimension.

Eve considered Mark's words, recognizing the complexity of his situation. "I get it, Mark. Relationships are about understanding and being there for each other. If you feel it's the right choice, then do what you think is best. Just make sure you're making the decision for the right reasons."

Mark nodded, a sense of determination in his eyes. "I don't want to keep hurting her. It's not fair to either of us. And with everything else going on..." He trailed off, not needing to finish the thought. The weight of his responsibilities as Invincible and the looming threat his father had revealed were indeed very good reasons.

The somber yet warm moment shattered as an enraged Omni-man touched down a mere few feet away. Nolan's arrival shattered the tranquil atmosphere, his stern expression casting a looming shadow over the scene. Frustration and disappointment danced in his eyes as they locked onto Mark and Eve. The weight of recent revelations, coupled with the urgency of the impending threat, added a palpable layer of tension to the air.

"Mark." Nolan's voice cut through the night, the command evident in his tone. "We need to talk. Now."

Mark and Eve exchanged glances, both understanding that the conversation ahead was likely to be intense. Mark nodded to Eve, silently conveying that he would catch up with her later. Eve gave him an encouraging smile before flying off into the night.

But Nolan flew faster than Mark could keep up and cut her off before she could continue. "You are here too; good, that makes things easier." Some of his frustration dissipated.

Both Mark and Eve were taken by surprise. "Uh, sure," Eve responded, uncertain of what else to say. She trailed behind Nolan and Mark after he signaled for Mark to follow him, his expression stern and unreadable. Without speaking another word, Nolan ascended into the night sky, leaving a gust of wind in his wake.

The trio soared through the night sky, with the city lights far below. The air was charged with an unspoken tension, and Mark couldn't shake the feeling that this conversation was about to delve into deeper, more challenging territory.

As they reached a secluded spot high above the city, Nolan came to a sudden stop. The winds whirred around them as he turned to face Mark, his gaze penetrating. "In light of recent events, there is a need to adjust some of our plans." Mark looked at his dad clench his fist and felt very nervous. "First, I want to ask you before anything else: are you sure you want to be a hero?"

Nolan narrowed his eyes as Mark opened his mouth, effectively shutting him down. "Think very carefully; an angsty teenager would complicate everything." Nolan crossed his arms. "I won't judge you if you back down. "

Mark, caught off guard by his father's unexpected question, felt a surge of conflicting emotions. The weight of recent revelations, the strain on his personal life, and the looming threat from the Viltrum empire all converged in this critical moment.

He took a moment to collect his thoughts before responding, "Dad, being a hero is important to me. It's who I am, and I want to help people."

Nolan studied Mark's face, searching for any sign of hesitation or doubt. The tension in the air was palpable as father and son locked eyes.

Nolan, maintaining his stern expression, nodded slowly. "Good. Because the path ahead won't be easy. There's a training regimen I have in mind, one that will push you beyond your limits." What he was planning was to beat him up within an inch of his life, but he already gave the okay, so no backing down later.

Nolan continued, keenly aware of Eve's presence. "The recent attack on the Guardians of the Globe is just the beginning. The Viltrum rogues are a formidable group, and we need to be ready. I have a plan, but it requires your full commitment."

Mark noted the different title he used to refer to his people; did something change? Was it fine to say the Viltrums were evil?

Before Mark could delve into the nuances of his father's language, Nolan's gaze intensified. "This training, Mark, isn't just physical. It's mental and emotional, and it will test the very core of who you are. Are you prepared for that?"

Mark, despite the lingering doubts and uncertainties, nodded. "I can handle it, Dad. I want to be ready for whatever comes our way." If Mark wanted to back down, this was his last chance.

Nolan's expression softened ever so slightly, a hint of paternal pride flickering in his eyes. "Good. We start tomorrow. Now, there's one more thing." Nolan turned his attention to Eve, who had been patiently waiting.

This was going to be trickier; how could he convince her? Nolan didn't want to go on a rampage on the flaxans like the original had done. Instead, making peace with them could prove to be more useful in the long run, but he needed Eve's... whatever she did to communicate with them.

Nolan's gaze shifted to Eve, his tone becoming more measured. "Eve, you're a formidable hero, and I appreciate your dedication to keeping earth safe. However, there's a task that requires your unique abilities."

Eve raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued. "What do you need, Omni-Man?"

Nolan took a moment before responding, choosing his words carefully. "We need to establish communication with the Flaxans. I believe a peaceful resolution is possible, and your abilities could be instrumental in achieving that."

Eve's eyes widened in surprise. "Communicate with the Flaxans? Omni-Man, after what they did, do you really think that's a good idea?"

Nolan's gaze remained steady. "Eve, we can't afford to let this escalate further. If we can negotiate a peaceful coexistence, it could save countless lives on both sides. We need to explore every option before resorting to conflict." He decided to appeal to her sense of justice; if she could uphold her principles even as the world burned around, then this was not a big deal in comparison.

Eve crossed her arms, her expression thoughtful. The idea of negotiating with the Flaxans after their previous attack was a challenging concept to grasp. Still, she recognized the importance of exploring peaceful alternatives, especially in the face of the looming Viltrumite rogues, or whatever Omni-Man called them.

"I get it, Omni-Man. Peaceful solutions are always better. But do you really think they'd be open to negotiation after what happened?" Eve's skepticism lingered in her words.

Nolan sighed, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. "I understand your reservations, Eve. The Flaxans might not be eager to negotiate, but we have to try. Preventing a cycle of violence that could spiral out of control is also a hero's duty."

Eve nodded slowly, her expression shifting from skepticism to a more contemplative stance. "Alright, Omni-Man. I'll do what I can to help with the communication. But if it goes south, I hope you have a plan B ready."

Nolan appreciated Eve's willingness to cooperate, knowing that the situation required delicate handling. "Thank you, Eve. We'll proceed cautiously. If all else fails, we'll consider other options. I just believe in exhausting every possibility for peace before resorting to more drastic measures."

Murdering every single Flaxan would be plan B; at that point, they would really be asking for it.
