Before I Knew It

Just The Beginning

He just stood staring, the evening haze was tiring, and the lights in front of him were blazing red like autumn leaves. His hands were clenched in the gate as he stared at his house, engulfed in flames. Sirens were blaring and he knew he had to leave before he was caught in the clatter. His hands slowly left the wet, warmed gate. He sighed, before begrudgingly turning, his eyes caught sight of his old home for the last, painstaking time. The heat of the fire slowly crept away, along with the orange light. It was almost pitch black, his eyes searched for a flame as that was where the joining ceremony might be. The bat in his hands was dragging behind him, it had dew drops scattered from the dawn before he picked it up. Though, now it was night, the school day had passed. it felt like a while since he left, his flashlight was in hand, as he kept on searching aimlessly in the darkened forest. His face scattered freckles that would soon parish beneath the spotty light that the trees slipped.

Nova finally arrived, a small  group of people most of which were visibly different. A lot of them had horns or disfigured limbs. But his focus was on a particular, two large beings that shook him to the bone, their bodies were semi translucent as if they were made of smoke. Both of them sported a skeleton face. the one to he left was wearing a thunder one, it had to be, it was so abnormally large and creepy. The one to the right looked like it wore a hellhound, little did he know, that would be his future leader . Their legs were instead replaced with long ginni or ghost like tails that replaced their legs. And their arms were abnormally long and large and their fingers were sharp claws. They were extremely tall, more than half the size of most of the group. Nova could tell that they were in control. They struck far in the hearts of all there.

He quietly approached the group, his face was hidden by a doll like mask, it had large eyes, rosy red cheeks, and a gaping expressionless mouth. The leaders picked the people by random, and he noticed that the people who looked visibly different were being called up first. Nova had the feeling he was going to be there for a good while. The cold night gave him shivers and goosebumps, he would rather die of heat stroke than freeze to death like this.

His eyes roamed the crowd, the flame lit faces were hard to see, the vivid memory of his last view of his home flashed in his mind, fire was now going to be a bit uncomfortable l, but he had the feeling he'd feel worse. He'd never thought that fire would strike so much sorrow in him, but he tried to hide his emotions as it was rather frowned upon, as said in the first meeting. One of the faces threw him off a bit, it took a bit for him to realize that blood trickled down her mouth. He was now even more fearful, the thoughts of  how did that even happen? And will that happen to me? Loomed in his mind. He felt dread, as this could only be the beginning.
