Chapter 39: Josh Home Safe

Melinda tucked Josh into his bed at Caleb’s house. The boy was tired from his adventure.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, Josh?”

His eyes were closed and his speech was mumbled. He wouldn’t take long to drop off. “I know that Caleb is a bear.”

She wasn’t sure what to think. Or what question to ask first. “Did Caleb show you?”

“Yes. It was faster to get me home.”

“What did you think?” she said.

“That it’s pretty cool he can do that. He made me promise not to tell anyone but you.”

“You’ll keep that promise?”

Josh rolled over onto his stomach. “Yes, Mommy.”

He was asleep. She kissed his head then turned off his light.

She found Caleb out on his porch. She eyed him for a moment, thinking about her feelings for him. She was in love with him. No doubt about it. Could she live the way he needed to live? Then again she didn’t know much about that.

He hadn’t asked anything of her when they’d just been lovers.

Caleb looked up as if sensing she was there. He eyed her warily. She smiled.
