The brilliant idea of wearing turtlenecks in the Mid-Sentry stabbed Tess at the heart. Lanse had pulled down her turtleneck to see her scar once. The memory numbed her entire neck as if all the blood was drained. 

She stared long at the tiled ground with Sensei's voice repeating in her head. Then came the terrified faces of MS officials right before her metal claws tore their guts out. Those screams she wanted to forget mingled with that from the park made her fidget. She hugged herself tighter and shut her eyes. But the memories she buried deep scratched and crawled their way to the front of her mind.
