Beast Companion

To contract a Spirit Beast is to shorten your life. To have no contract is to be exiled. This is the reality Mateus faces when he was reborn into a new world. Spirit Beasts are creatures that live off the natural Life Essence that gathers in pockets around the world. Humans contract these beasts using their own lives, in return for the power to fight against the Mutant Beasts. All cities are under constant attack from these dangerous, murderous monsters, and any human without a contract is just dead weight to be discarded. Can Mateus survive in this ruthless world? And what truths will he find?

Beast Facts Guide For New Contractors

After what felt like hours of paperwork, Mateus found himself sitting in a mess hall eating something that was called a 'composite nutritional biscuit'. It was extremely solid and had to be soaked with tea to have any flavour other than cardboard. Despite the soaking, this biscuit maintained the appetising texture of wet cardboard.

Even so, Mateus was eating it with conflicted enjoyment - this was the most expensive meal he had ever eaten. This biscuit was made from seven crops grown in the Essence Vale, with various vitamins and supplements added. It was exceptionally nutritious, and could quickly recover Essence back to optimum levels. Long periods of consumption could even raise the density of essence people had daily.

This was a super food designed for soldiers with function before all else. Civilians could not buy this stuff without special licences. With every bite, Mateus felt disappointment at the taste conflicting with the euphoria of replenishing his essence reserves.

After the bowl was empty, Mateus was still unsatisfied. The examination of his Companions was followed by Mateus' essence being re-examined by a more accurate machine. It turned out that although he had 20 units daily, the density and purity of his essence was 10 times higher than the average. Meaning his 20 was closer to 200 - an amount that left the captain speechless in envy and regret. Envy, because who doesn't want to live longer and contract stronger Beasts? Regret because the only offensive ability his 11 contracts gave him was Chill Shot.

It's like a person had a cheat for unlimited ammo in a MRPG but their weapon is a peashooter. Still, with proper training and care the Sparkling would metamorphose into a stronger Beast, and her abilities would upgrade.

After leaving the mess hall Mateus was shown to his new barracks. It had everything - beds, showers, exercise equipment and an open air training ground for Spirit Beasts. The physical health and strength of a Beast dictates the strength of Shared Abilities, so there are no excuses to avoid training.

Finally Mateus was informed which training group he was assigned to, and told to settle in and read his Beginner's Guide book.

Sitting on the bed in the shared dorm, Mateus stared at the famous book. Every new Contractor is given a copy of the guide after their Companions have been recorded to their identities. It is the single most informative source of information in Florinad. Countless years of research have been distilled into a moderately thick book, and selflessly distributed to every human by the government.

'The Beast Facts Guide for New Contractors' was printed on the thin paper cover. Flipping it open, Mateus found the Index directly on the fly leaf. Not a single scrap of space was wasted, as words were printed in closely like sardines in a tin.

Looking at these segments, Mateus started feeling overwhelmed. It hit him again like a sledgehammer to the chest - he transmigrated. This isn't his world, and he was supposed to be dead in a dark alley with five bullets in his chest.

Mateus had lived such a wretched life - he didn't deserve such an adorable sister like Danica, or fun Companions like the Pretty Bird and Arrogant Roobit. He wasn't good. Not even close.

The machine said his Essence had high purity - but only Mateus knew it was Pure Evil.

Still, thinking about all this was only trying to deny the inevitable, so Mateus sighed, straightened up and started reading.
