Chapter 40: Holiday for Two

The highway slowly changes to one-way streets as we make our way into the Key Largo, the first Key of the Florida Keys. The sleepy beach town lies dormant as we drive down darkened streets towards Dolfin. I’ve lived my entire life in Florida, but going to the Keys was something that was left to those with a car and lots of gas money. Something I’ve never had the luxury of having. A fountain of stone dolphins sits illuminated at the entrance as we drive into the cobblestone roundabout of Dolfin. A cargo-shorts-wearing man opens my door and I sling my purse over my shoulder. The smell of the sea smacks me in the face and the warm breeze pushes my hair away from my face. Not even an hour away from the mainland, and it already feels like paradise. Saz walks beside me and offers his arm. “Shall we check in, my lady?”

I weave my arm in between his and play along. “Lead the way, my good sir.”
