Two blond sisters from the east take the city of Lagos….

My name is Mary born in October 2000 and my mother had me when she was sixteen working as a waitress ten blocks away from our yard within the slum area of Port Harcourt which by the way I don't know my father.

Five years later So excited that I now had a father figure in my life This man my mom was seeing turned out to be abusive to her and when she found out she was pregnant again wanted to stay with him regardless so I started talking especially when nana sit out front of her house which was the only beautiful house in the yard and oldest who loves nothing but gossip but bakes a very delicious cake, I bet if she'd run a gossip blog she makes money off it like Linda ikeji.

With black swollen eyes prove I was telling the truth Even if my mom lied about getting beat up at the club where she works our neighbours weren't buying which proves Nana was spreading the talk That's how we ended up with the surname Newspread whom my mom picked out as surname.

One morning he said he was going to get breakfast but never returned, Mom had hoped maybe he would show up for nothing but their child's sake never did.

Everything started from a picture I saw in the magazine, a very beautiful city with the title Welcome to Lagos, Nana has beautiful daughters who send in supplies every weekend and that Includes magazines, newspapers and books I do chores in exchange for the magazine. As I continued to fall in love with the pictures on each page, I found out about a very comfortable lifestyle that was far better than how we lived down here.

A beautiful glass house, collections of French designers that's how I knew shoes like Rene Caovilla and Amina Muaddi, and clothing brands like Gucci, Tom Ford, and Dior. Skincare and cosmetics products like Maccosmectics, Kylie cosmetics, and Fenty Beauty with elegant models, and cool rich human hair extensions In contrast I was this freak setting a beauty standard for myself that I wanted to achieve.

I was not a fan of school I constantly ditched school since my mom spent her day sleeping and doing chores then going out to work at night she didn't know I was skipping school a lot while on the other hand, my younger sister Jessica was so smart, into technology and operating computers expertly. It bores me so I spend time more with Simon and Nana magazines.

We were so poor, starving and wearing rags that my mom was unable to pay the rent often based on how she had been hurt by men she thought safe with it, She decided not to date and rather focus on her kids which was me and Jessica, so she didn't have any supportive partner and her job wasn't bringing in the bare minimum.

I wanted more in life, I wanted to wear those shoes I came across in the magazine but they cost more than our house and can pay four years of tuition money for a community university which Jesica is obsessed with attending to acquire a degree in computer engineering she never stop talking about it and sometimes it makes me wonder if I will be able to achieve that.

I had a goal which I knew was impossible to achieve At least my sister had brains when it comes to books She could have a job in a company plausible mom would Invest her last penny so she could see her through university, I wasn't book smart, had any talent nor skill that will generate me money, the only thing I had was hope maybe good life will find its way into my lap.

I turned fifteen years old, my younger sister ten years old, and everything was still stuck the same already dropped out of my junior year because I couldn't get my grades up and my mom was highly disappointed in me, I always knew I was never gonna end up like her so I stay far away from boys she trusted me with Simon because he was my best friend.

I began to wonder what I do to get a luxurious life, how I help my mom and sister She couldn't continue to keep that waitressing job and trust me the tips dropped every day and it was little to nothing. I won't be able to slide my feet in Amina muaddi heels staying here, I have to travel down to Lagos a city of opportunities that I fell madly in love with, my dream city, the Afro music, the culture and elegance.

Hope was no longer enough for me I had these dreams since I was like seven years old if a good life is not gonna come to me then I might as well go look for it, After all, Mom was so fed up with me. Simon and I steal car parts and sell them in the mechanic village cheaper, sooner the police are gonna burst us because we have been caught three times.

...light shone bright in my cell I opened my eyes.

"Shit has been dreaming all these while thinking about my old life," I said to myself at the same time very happy because I'm getting out of prison today after serving three years for drug charges and illegal guns and ammo.

I bought a few designers before ending up here but not my dream penthouse so if these police officers think these three years are gonna put me into a shell then they are mistaken, I'm going back to the street.

"Be a good kid out there" the police lady said to me giving me the things that I was arrested in.

"We see about that," I said in sarcasm, She stared at me sternly as I walked into the changing room, my murgler black dress still fit me Thank God I wasn't so skinny. I'm free from the walls of barbarians and callous humans except my boyfriend though who is facing life.
