Chapter 15

——————————————————

Maximus's POV

——————————————————

After teaching Eve about America's future numerical system, which I'm not going to lie about, I have no idea what its name is. I may have had perfect grades but my memory is just above 99.9 percent of the human population! It's sad being my looks overshadow all of history, not just human. The 2 are incomparable.

So after around 2 hours of writing numbers repetitively, and a lot of correct answers, I took Eve to get a garden break and just to let us roam around. I think she opened up over the time I have spent with her. Today she even told me many flowers names and how they weren't just pretty, but also helped give different people inspiration. She is a flower nerd. Not in a bad way but she also apparently study's flowers' meanings.

We had lunch that the new chef actually made and sadly was not poisoned. Also I'm pretty sure that the chef was just a servant who was assigned chef duty as the food was ok and the new chef kept apologizing. For. Every. Little. Thing. It was painful, after being in this world for a bit I realized that apology's mean a lot more than mine. Which is odd, I figured it would be the other way around. But if you half-*ass an apology here you can expect getting murdered. Now why was this in a blood that is easily accessible to Eve? I have no idea. I was reading Roman Noble etiquette and then a section on apologies appears, they are super basic. The only thing that matters is how you get your feelings through to the person you're apologizing to.

Anyways she was an "apologizer" and any time she apologized I could say "it wasn't sincere enough" and then she would be done. For the non-nobles apparently it is common to apologize just to get someone off your back. So the new chef is not used to Nobles. Fingers crossed that she won't shank Eve in her sleep.

We went back to the study after lunch, studied for a bit, went to the garden, study, garden, study and finally it was time to go to bed. So I walked Eve to her bedroom and resumed carving my rocking horse! Only to hear after 30 minutes, someone walking outside the door to Eve's room. This happens a lot but nicer do they stop outside the door. I see the door open slightly and someone sneaks in. It looks to be an older male servant, he walks over to Eve and pulls out a knife. He raises it high, readying himself to stab Eve. He swings down only to be caught by my hand.

This is an example of a sad man, he not only tried to kill a little girl, but also didn't even try to survey the room. Or even listen to rumors around the manor, I know other servants have been talking about me sleeping in here.

I wrestle his hand down to behind his back and use my other hand to wrestle his other hand behind his back. I hold both of his wrists together behind his back with one hand. I use my now free hand to cover his mouth and plug his nose. And I stand here holding this struggling man waiting for him to fall unconscious. I'm sure there are better ways to knock someone unconscious. I know a lot more ways to kill someone that knock someone out. I also don't have full control of my strength, I would've tried the chop otherwise.

After 2 minutes he finally stops struggling. I release the hand holding his mouth and he starts to breathe immediately, but doesn't wake up. So I lay him on the floor and rip off his shirt to fashion it into a rope. I tie his hands behind his back with a bunny knot. I put him on a chair in Eve's room and call for a servant. Someone groggily walks over and asks what I need.

"I need a strong rope and handcuffs, right now!"

"Ugh- I can go grab a rope but there is no way I'm getting whatever "handcuffs" are."

I see them slowly walk away.

"You have 5 minutes to get back. If you arrive any later, I will cut off your head and fashion your hair into a rope!"

The servant starts speeding down the hall and I Arusha back into Eve's room to make sure the tied up man is still unconscious. I stand in front of him and wait for the servant to return with rope, it only takes 2 minutes for them to return with the rope. They hand it to me and book it out of the room. I restrain the tied up man to the chair and wait for him to wake up.

It takes him 10 ish minutes to regain consciousness. After he does he sucks in air as if he's going to scream so I put my hand to his mouth and block his voice. I rip off one of the legs of pants and ball it up. I shove the pants ball into his mouth, silencing him. There is no way I'm going to let him wake Eve up. She can sleep. I'll tell her the situation tomorrow. I stand up and walk away from the man and resume my craft.

——————————————————

While working on Eve's rocking horse, she wakes up and inhales deeply.

"W-why is there a tied up man in my room?!"

"Because he was trying to kill you."

"What?!? Kill me?"

"Yes, I restrained him. You told me you wanted to learn magic so I'm going to test it in him first!"

"WHY did he try to kill me?"

"Not sure."

"Why didn't you wake me?!"

"I wanted you to get some rest."

"I was almost killed!"

"I was here!"

She goes silent and just stares at me. So I stare back and we stay like this for 2 minutes, neither of us willing to give up in our contest. I am unwilling to admit that I am worse than a kid at something other than random knowledge, like flowers. So we keep staring until we hear a loud banging sound and lots of muffled screams. I turn to see the tied up servant rocking in the chair with bloodshot eyes.

"Quiet! Let us finish our contest!"

The man stops rocking and stares at me. So I stare back.
