Chapter 43: The Fall Of Light I

...........

Lord Yosel was unaware that what he was searching for lay beneath his feet, down underground... Millions... Tens of Millions of the Dead!! All looking in his direction ominously, feeling his repulsive light!!!

And as if driven by madness or maybe their master's orders, they crawled their way outside, through the tunnels of their own making.

What's underground is no Hive base but simply a colony, akin to the complex colonies of ants, vast with Zombies Queens everywhere, far underground, nearly a mile down.

They crawled their way through the numerous tunnels, and with that, the ground started shaking... For an army of millions was on the move.

The Zombies were fast, very fast, much faster than even the fastest of normal humans. They feel no pain nor do they need any rest. The New Silver Effect also got rid of their need for flesh.

However, there still seemed to be some kind of instinctive desire within them to consume flesh and blood, only stopped by the existence of the Hive Mind.

The desire for flesh was now unleashed, so as swift as the coming of darkness, they crawled and crawled, reaching the ground in less than a minute and exiting from the numerous holes hidden all over the city.

If the group of uninvited intruders wished to retreat, they could not... The entire city was now overflowing with zombies from all directions.

There were normal Zombies, Abominations, Lickers, Even Fucking Zombie Spiders! Every creature you could think of was underground, a nest from which no one could return.

With the rise of Zombies came the rise of mist. It seemingly came out of nowhere, limiting their vision, "Ah, God! Grant us sight!!"

"We have to fight our way out of here, quickly!!!" Lord Yosel cried, his figure shining golden, "Let's get rid of evil! For the one and only God, Icarus!!"

The knights yet were still in fear, and so were the casters behind them who cried out endless words of prayers, until their Lord's grace shone upon them, and fear left them.

"AGHHHHHH!!!" They were what seemed to be a howl, followed by an earthquake as the ground shook to the point that it cracked and rubbles scattered, rubbles which started bouncing about due to the sheer force of the masses of Zombies approaching.

The knights gulped, even if fear was taken from them, the knowledge that Death was before them was still there.

And finally, they saw them, hordes of Zombies lunging at them from all sides, leaping toward them from buildings, from the darkness of buildings, and even falling upon them from the roofs high in the sky.

"Kill them!! Kill them all!!!" Lord Yosel bellowed as he pulled out his sword, a sword that shone with golden flames as he swung it, sending a wave of flames that scorched everything in its path.

Each and every one of them is from another World, one of the three Worlds that were forcefully introduced into the Game Of Awakening, so they naturally also experienced awakening.

All of them, the dozen and a half individuals are awakeners with special abilities. They're a specialized team that was sent to another World with a mission, so they must be very strong.

And strong they were as one released green energy arrows from a bow he manifested while another gave life to New York's dead streets as she summoned coils of grass and trees from the cracks in the road.

The knight that took the position of the vanguard was also quite special as all he did was run through the hordes of Zombies with his massive shield, a shield that seemed to be enforced with some kind of energy that repelled anything that came in contact with it.

The casters behind, on the other hand, acted as most casters do, staying behind while launching devastating attacks. The team was made perfectly to function in sync, their abilities complementing each other.

They broke through hordes of Zombies, only to face another, then even more. Their energy grew little. Their mind grew weak, exhaustion seeping through their veins.

They were trying desperately to escape, not to fight, yet even that was enough to drive them weary beyond belief, panting yet stumbling forward, all due to their belief in the One True God.

"Neil!! What're you doing!!!" If only belief was enough. If only belief was enough to solve all the problems of the World. It's not for just one scratch is enough to ruin it all.

"Goo!! Just Go! I'll  turn soon!!!" The knight, Neil yelled back, holding his left arm, no longer armored, broken by the claws of the dead... He was scratched.

That's why even strong awakeners tend to stay away from the dead, for even a scratch could declare the end of their conscious life, becoming nothing but a node in the Hive Mind of tens of millions.

The knights' eyes both turned red but they held it in as the infected turned around and faced the sea of Zombies running after them, "AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!"

The knight's braze cry as he leaped towards the horde was soon muffled as he found himself amidst darkness, under so much pressure that his strong bones were shattering.

The knight couldn't move. He could only watch as numerous Zombies fed upon his flesh, reaching out through the cracks of his armor to take a sweet yummy bite, his screams of pain haunting his group as they continued to run, unable to bear looking back.

"Move!! Move!!" Lord Yosel bellowed as he harvested the Zombies before him with his golden flames, "We're clos..." They were certainly close to exiting the city... They just had to cross the hurdle before them.

The hurdle was Zombies, zombies falling from the buildings directly onto them, a sea of zombies standing before them, and spiders, spiders the size of cars.

The spiders were many, all black with some having red markings on their back. They're what's known as the most dangerous spiders in the world, The funnel web spider.

Neither their golden shields nor their flames and special abilities were gonna help them through what was to come. They could only feel despair, but in the darkest of times, they always pray.

"Lord Of Salvation! God of All! Please save your pious devotees from this hellish evil!!" Lord Yosel prayed loudly, and as if his prayers were heard, a golden figure manifested before them, overshadowing them all.

The golden figure was tall, as tall as the buildings about. The figure was that of a man whose face was vague as he swung his monstrous hand to swipe away all the Zombies about.

The figure's hand fell and with it, numerous zombies were simply squashed. The figure was no God, Lord Yosel realized. The figure was the manifestation of someone, someone within the golden brilliance of the manifestation, controlling it from within.

The figure was very familiar, none other than Lord Bernard who came back to New York with vengeance in mind... No, he was summoned here and tailed the group for long, for he seemingly worships the same god?

"New York will be mine! And mine alone!" Bernard's muffled voice was barely heard by anyone, only caught by the ones watching from afar.

"Do it now," Another much calmer voice sounded, serene and gentle, "Do not take your time. Kill him for someone else is watching."

The speaker was naturally Silver who is resting in one of his numerous labs, yet his voice sounded right beside Natalia who is in New York.

Besides her was a zombie, just a normal zombie, made apparent by its largely shredded skin which was breaking yet healing at the same time.

Zombies even with the Silver Effect aren't stable creatures, in a constant fight with themselves to survive from the unstable silver cells.

Strangely, it was the Zombie who spoke in quite the weird voice as if his vocal cords were all fucked up, and what sounded was exactly Silver's words.

The Hive Mind is growing, and Silver is exploring it more and more, discovering new ways to use it, such as personally controlling Zombies or talking through them.

"Aghh, this is weirding me out," Natalia couldn't help but glance at the Zombie, "I'm not used to you being ugly."

"Get used to it," The Zombie shrugged, "Now, get to work."

Natalia shook her head before walking right out of the window, leaping into the air as coils of threads swam around her, forming something akin to butterfly wings.

Unnoticed, she looked at the sky as she murmured, "Let my spirals of threads fall upon him! Leaving nothing behind..." Not very original, but Words have power.
