Chapter 9: T Virus III

...........

'Wait... Isn't this like the T Virus?' Silver narrowed his eyes, seeming in deep thought, 'When fiction becomes reality, huh...'

The man closed his eyes for a long while, his mind drifting through many sailing thoughts, coming up to a frightening realization, "This is the game's gift to humanity... Which means that the other worlds have also acquired some kind of gift, gifts disguised as misfortune."

That's a good thing to some but bad news to others because it means that the game is even deadlier than previously thought.

'The gift, however, needs to be slowly unraveled,' Silver knows research. He's been doing it for his entire life, so he didn't hurry, knowing that there might be some other dangers to the virus.

He checked up on the vials again, noticing another peculiar thing about the virus. Without enough energy, the virus entered hibernation, possibly being able of preserving the cells for a seemingly indefinite amount of time.

The problem of energy seems to be the most pressing matter, Silver knows. Even he has the same problem. After all, his energy doesn't just appear out of nowhere, he needs food to produce energy.

That's why when he was constantly using his energy in the city, he had to constantly eat food or his energy regeneration won't be able to keep up.

It seems that the law of conservation of energy still stands, his high endurance only allowed him to use way less energy for human functioning as well as produce energy way faster, among other things.

'According to the law of conservation of energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transformed from one form to another,' Silver mused in his mind as he lifted his hand, on which floated a silver construct, the Silver Effect, 'So how are you able to create energy out of nothing, or perhaps you're transforming some kind of energy?'

He noticed a while ago that the Silver Effect was producing energy, albeit slowly. How? He was unsure, so the research continued with the Silver Effect included.

Soon came dawn, and he didn't sleep for even a single second, all his focus was on research, the result of which changed his outlook on the future significantly.

Silver took off his hazmat suit before thoroughly cleaning himself up, taking a shower, then meeting up with Natalia who had also just woken up.

"We still don't have much results of the preliminary research on the virus, but here is the list of all the people who joined us," Natalia said as she handed him the list.

"Three awakeners? Not bad, and their abilities are good," Silver looked through it before commenting.

"The one with the Hawk's eye ability... He's a child, and his mother will certainly not allow him to help us. She seemed very vigilant when I was asking questions yesterday," Natalia pointed out.

"They'll have to contribute somehow," Silver shook his head, already expecting such a result, "It doesn't matter how, but they have to do something."

"I already assigned some of them to do the cooking. They'll be preparing breakfast for everyone daily. The rest, I will see where they fit." Natalia nodded.

"I discovered something," Silver said as he stroked his chin, "The infected cells divide at a fast rate, about one division every ten minutes or so, the goal of that accelerated division is what's interesting...

I think the goal is some kind of DNA mutation, any mutation. The process of cell division involves the replication of DNA. The faster the cells divide, the higher the chances of errors occurring during DNA replication.

These errors can accumulate and lead to significant genetic abnormalities and mutations... So I think the T virus is seeking evolution through this method, perhaps even controlled evolution."

"Wait... Wait..." Natalia had to blink twice, somewhat speechless, "The virus has awareness?"

"It's certainly aware. The question is how aware is it? That I don't know," Silver shook his head, "What I know though is that the virus is very controlling, able to regulate the zombies to still function despite the ridiculous division rate of their cells."

"Able to minimize the risks but also increase the advantages?" Such a possibility was frightening to the point, "The World is doomed... I get it now, why the first stage is named Doomsday." Natalia murmured.

"We still need a lot of manpower, and we need to make people feel like they belong here, to build a community, or maybe a Sanctuary," Silver thoughtfully stated.

"Something I was going to recommend," Natalia smiled, "But what should we name it? Silver Sanctuary?"

"Silver Sanctuary?" Silver shook his head, not finding the name pleasing to the ear, "The virus, I named it the T virus because it behaves similarly to the virus in the Resident Evil franchise, so let's commit to that and name ourselves... Umbrella Sanctuary."

"Pfft hahaha," Natalia couldn't help but laugh aloud, "Typical of you, and I see your vision, but wouldn't our image be synchronized with the evil corp that's Umbrella?"

"Hopefully, it will," Silver murmured as he released a serene smile, "That's exactly what I want."

"Oh?" Natalia eyed him strangely but didn't prey any further, "We need to build a wall around here, mostly against animals and bugs... They can also turn, right?"

"They can," Silver nodded, "I got rid of all the bugs around here as well as the farm, but we should still build a wall just in case, and we should also set this as a rule, always burn the dead, whether humans or animals."

"We should make a place solely for cremating dead bodies," Natalia firmly nodded after getting out of her surprise. She has been wondering why she saw no signs of animals or bugs transforming around, or even seeing a single bug, but it seems that Silver had already taken care of it.

"Also, we will need a lot of materials and manpower, but how do we get them?" Natalia couldn't help but ask, "We can't go back to the city, can we?"

"Not now of course," Silver shook his head, knowing better than to take such a risk even with his ability, "But we don't need to go to the city. We can..."

His words came to a halt. Everything came to a halt as the voice finally reached them, a scream so annoying even Silver had to block his ears, and so did everyone else.

It was a very high pitched scream that only lasted for seconds, but its effects were devastating as aside from feeling numb all over his body, Silver also smelled the familiar smell of fried electronics, specifically his phone as well as Natalia's.

"An Emp??" Silver frowned as he stood up, looking at Natalia just as she looked back at him, and without further ado, they went out and verified their doubts.

The scream somehow worked as an emp which fried all electronic devices around, although the impact on turned-off devices was less severe.

Soon Silver found himself on the roof, joining Sam as he directly asked, "Did you notice anything strange before the scream?"

"No, but it sounded like it came from the city?" Even Sam was having a hard time believing them, doubting his ears as the city was miles away. Who can scream so loudly that it reaches them here?

Higher-frequency sounds tend to dissipate more quickly than lower-frequency sounds, yet not only did this sound not dissipate but it sounded clear, very clear even after traveling for miles.

"Alright, keep watch and tell me if anything changes, anything at all," Silver instructed before going back, finding that Natalia had already assembled all the researchers.

"First, we should look at all our electronics, especially those that have been off, anything salvageable, we will isolate, and is there or do you know anyone that specializes in electronics?"

And among the new residents, there were actually two that specialize in that field. According to them, while some of the fried devices can be repaired, it would require completely new chips among other things.

The problem, however, was that the emp scream was so strong that it disabled most of the cars, so their means of transporting back materials was gone.

Well, plans change, "I'll probably have to go alone, but not now." Silver shook his head as he took care of some things, and had a ridiculously large breakfast before heading back to his lab.
