Chapter 27: Divinity I

...........

"Why did you come back?" The cold chilling voice reverberated throughout the hall, "Why did you bother coming back? All alone, in failure?"

The man who spoke was Lord Carvel, his face as cold as ice, although there was a hint of anger hidden in his eyes.

The failure before him was none other than the Tracker whose face was pale, seemingly entirely drained of blood, horrow apparent in his eyes, "N-not my fault!!! The colony came back!!"

"Hm?" Lord Carvel narrowed his eyes, remembering that the colony of zombies that was shrouded in radiation suddenly vanished, leaving only a few zombies and abominations behind.

Its disappearance also coincided with the incident a while ago, in which their Ice slave was taken, and quite the precious slave she was, so important in fact that Carvel did everything in his power to find her, to no avail.

The colony resided in a very radiation intensive area, the very reason it became a colony, so they stayed away from it for even Carvel feared what lay in there.

Strangely though, the zombie colony vanished not long ago, something he verified, yet here he was, hearing that it's there, and stronger than ever?

"Explain!!" Carvel was understandably worked up as his settlement was not far from the colony, a threat that always hung on his back but couldn't get rid of.

In fact, his only hope in countering it was none other than Crystal. That and simply leaving the city, but the city was too precious in his mind to leave, and switching location also isn't possible as basically every territory in the city is taken, and those who rule over them are comparable to him in power.

"We! We traced our way back to track them... Zombies, zombies everywhere... W-We wanted to run, but they surrounded us... Too quickly did we fall, and only I escaped," The horror in the Tracker's eyes seemingly vanished, a crazed smile surfacing on his face.

"You? You escaped?" Carvel naturally doubted the Tracker, an ominous premonition emerging in his mind as he eyed the Tracker's crazed smile, frowning deeply as he asked, "What?!"

"The World is doomed," The Tracker whispered, his expression changing constantly, "And I hope you're doomed with it!!!"

Carvel narrowed his eyes, the ominous premonition only thickening due to the Tracker's crazed state, so without hesitation, he reached out with his large hand, lifting the Tracker by the neck, "What have you done??!!!!"

"HHa hah hah," The Tracker could barely laugh, suffocating, but still doing his best to leave behind a few words, "The Zombies!! T-They're intelligent!!! Hahaha, they let me leave... To get to you!!!!"

It was apparent by this point that the Tracker was certainly not loyal to Carvel, probably few are, only kept on a leash by fear of his power. a leash that couldn't resist the force of insanity.

"God Damn it!!!!!!!" Carvel bellowed in rage as his hand enveloped the entirety of the Tracker's head, crushing it with ease, getting rid of his crazed ominous laughter.

The Tracker knew the consequences of his words, Death. However, he also knew the consequences of coming back alive from a failure of a mission, also Death. Carvel is that cruel, and cruelty is infectious!

"Lock Down The Entirety Of The Settlement!!! Call Everyone Back!!!" Carvel bellowed again, his deafening voice being heard throughout the settlement, "Contact The Other Lords!!"

The Zombies becoming intelligent was certainly the worst news he could've heard, and it might as well perfectly spell the words, The World Is Doomed.

Carvel found himself uncertain for the first time in a while as even his dragonic ability couldn't make him too assured.

He knows that there are others out there with similarly strong abilities, just waiting for his fall, the other Lords, only news as shocking as zombies gaining intelligence could stop them.

So without further ado, Carvel, in his dragonic form headed out before courching, only to leap high in the sky, landing on a high building nearby, and causing it to shake in the process.

Carvel traced his eyes about, trying to confirm the Tracker's words. it was evening, still an hour away from sunset, allowing Carvel to see the few zombies moving about.

There were very few zombies around as he and his underlings made sure to clean things up every now and then, but there was still something that irked him.

Carvel felt like he was being watched. Someone out there was watching him from the shadows, or rather, many things were watching him.

Carvel's pupils suddenly changed, opening up a slit like the eyes of a snake, or rather, a dragon. The things he couldn't see before, he could see, and it all made his face change significantly.

Hidden in the shadows of every building, sneakily eyeing him were hordes of zombies, abominations, and lickers, and those were only the things he could see, let alone what hid in the depths of the surrounding buildings.

There was, however, something or someone that wasn't so hidden nor did he wish to be, standing by a dark window while looking at him.

The figure looked strange, to say the least, quite tall and wearing a white hazmat suit, the figure's description fitting perfectly with the unknown man that took Crystal away.

He just stood there menacingly, staring at him with interest

as if he can clearly see him from so far away.

It's understandable that Carvel can see him due to his dragonic ability, but that the unknown man in the hazmat suit can see him was certainly a surprise to Carvel.

What was even more of a surprise was the unknown man lifting his hand before signaling to him to come over, inviting him to join him in the dark abandoned building he seemingly resides within.

So here was Lord Carvel, one of the most fearsome individuals in what New York has come to be, feared by most survivors, and here was the unknown man, the one who took away Crystal, inviting him for a chat? Yet the only thing Carvel did was jump back.

For the first time in a while, Carvel was fearful, dread coursing through his veins upon realizing that behind the man were zombies. No, the entire building was filled with zombies.

The implication of such a discovery was frightening, and Carvel despite his dragonic blood was certainly not brave enough to traverse to the Unknown.

Hell, even if the other Lords were here, specifically, he would still not take the chance. Not that they would be here anytime soon, not with humanity's usual communication mechanisms being completely down.

It was a symptom of the second fog, completely cutting off the internet, and even radio signals, truly bringing the world to the dark ages.

That wasn't the only thing that changed with the passing of the second fog, 'A Lord... He's a Lord?' Indeed, the word Lord entails more than meets the eye.

Lords of Settlements, sanctuaries, and organizations, due to them ruling over others, gained a very special benefit, something they've come to call Divinity.

However, they kept their mouths shut regarding it for it's such a delicious meal that everyone would jump on it if they were to know of its existence, thus likely leading to the fall of man lords.

No... They're wrong. The World will sooner than later come to learn of the existence of Divinities for the requirement for accessing them isn't ruling over others, but simply their influence over reality.

Or rather, influence over others. How other individuals see them, and their belief in them. Sooner than later, individuals who don't rule over others will also feel Divinities' existence.

At least, that's Silver's conclusion as he clearly felt the Divinity surrounding Carvel, Fear perhaps?
