Chapter 25: Am I A Coward? I

...........

"The hunt has begun," Lord Carvel's strange draconic eyes shone brightly as he murmured, excitement surging through his bones at the mere thought of a new prey... Silver?

Speaking of Silver, he had a lot of work to take care of, starting by changing the research samples to the New Silver Effect, a necessary step as he basically got rid of all the old Silver Effects.

Only then did he find himself some time off as he joined Crystal who has been living in Natalia's house, still just as absent-minded as ever.

Well, only her half-dead state seems to always evaporate when Silver is brought into the equation as a trace of surprise prevailed her icy face at his appearance, a very common reaction due to his recent transformation.

It wasn't just the transformation of his soul, or rather, it was due to the transformation of his body due to injecting himself with the stable T virus and the New Silver Effect.

Silver was never silver nor was his favorite color ever silver. His favorite color is white, and he only called himself Silver due to the Silver Effect.

However, he truly looked Silver as in contrast to his previously inky hair, it was now silver with only a few strands remaining black, even his skin had a silver hue to it, almost as if he was glowing.

The T virus made him evolve, his every cell constantly undergoing mutations, making his already handsome face even more handsome, especially with his bright silver eyes.

Most importantly, what attracted Crystal's attention even more was his gentle smile, speaking of his very good mood. In fact, he had never looked happier, especially since she had taken him previously to be the icy cold type.

"How do you feel?" Silver asked as he took a seat by her side, watching the sunset alongside her. The town is beautiful with plenty of natural views, something she has taken a liking to, and in fact, the only thing she's been doing for the past several days is watching nature from the balcony.

"No response, huh?" Silver shook his head, not surprised, "I've seen you... The day when it all started, and I've seen who was with you... The little girl, was it your sister?"

Crystal's expression couldn't help but change as she winced from what seemed to be pain, mental pain, not questioning how he had seen them despite hiding behind the door.

"So she's dead?" Silver muttered, loud enough for her to hear his calm voice as he dug right where it hurts the most, "Were you betrayed? Were you naive? Or did you just fail to protect her, leading to her death? Maybe even worse."

She clenched her hands as she listened to his gentle voice, a stark contrast to his harsh words that made her bite her mouth so hard she started bleeding, yet as if not aware, he continued.

"I remember judging her to be in her early teens so maybe they didn't go too far, but who knows, humans doing the most heinous evil is the least surprising thing in the world," Silver chuckled despite his words that have long gone overboard.

"You must've been tortured, physically and mentally... They must've messed with your mind quite a lot. That's what the two mentalists from before were for, right? To brainwash you and control you, although they weren't that successful," These specific words didn't affect her as much, certainly not as much as even being reminded of her sister.

"They tried to control you to attack me when I was taking you away, and I was prepared to knock you out, but you were able to resist, quite the strong mind or rather a strong soul. I wonder how it got that strong? Did you witness what they did to your sister?" And the cruel words came back just when the word relief appeared in her mind.

Silver was telling a story, her story based on what he knows, but he wasn't really sure if it was right, not until he noticed her reaction, allowing him to deduce even more clues, "I can see your state. I can see through your body, how cold it is. They weren't able to touch you, so maybe, just maybe, they..."

Crystal felt like she was about to throw up, torturous memories overwhelming her mind until she finally snapped, "Stop!!!" Silver heard Crystal's voice. She finally spoke with a trembling tone, tears dripping down her face, "Why? W-why are you doing this?"

"You know, I'm a hypocrite," Silver let out a chuckle as he murmured, "I hate the Unknown for It can't be known, but I love the Unknown when I'm the Unknown... I hate how I don't know so much about you, your mutation, the prey's location, and so much more."

Silver stood up, pulling the chair alongside him to sit before her, masking the view so that she would focus only on him, "It's so easy to uncover the Unknown surrounding you... All you have to do is to talk, but you were akin to the dead. Nothing Natalia did worked, so I have to apologize for having to employ this method."

"S-so cruel," Crystal mumbled as if life found itself back to her icy body.

"It's cruel," Silver agreed before letting out quite the strange smile, as if he was seeing something else entirely as he murmured, "Souls exist. The dead can come back to life, although seemingly soulless. Someone is out there capable of creating a game enveloping several words, also capable of seamlessly teleporting our entire solar system to a completely different universe."

Crystal was confused, so utterly confused, but she listened with unrivaled focus, his cruel words having awakened her completely from her dead state. It was unknown whether that was intentional or not but what matters is that Crystal took all his words in.

"The unknown entity is seemingly capable of awakening humanity, allowing the select few to have powers that surpass even the craziest of miracles. They're capable of granting humanity the ability to grow stronger by gaining awakening points, like a game." Silver added.

Crystal heard so many things she didn't know before, such as the fact that they are in a completely different universe? Just how?

"Such an entity... It sounds like a god, a cruel god, maybe someone or something capable of bringing back the death... No, I'd even bet that there is an awakener who is capable of bringing back the death." He finally got to the point, making her eyes widen.

"Rather, no need to bet as the probability of that being the case is more than 60%," Silver stated with confidence, "In fact, I myself can recreate a body from a single cell... The only puzzle is where the soul goes after death... Does death still sound so terrifying after hearing this?"

"I... I can save her? Why are you helping me?" Crystal couldn't help but ask, still hesitant, but even responding to him was enough to show that his whispers reached her.

"For me. I'm helping you for the sake of myself," Silver was too honest. He was always quite the honest guy, "I see potential in you, and I'd very much like to see... In other words, I want you as one of my very willing experiments."

Even if the circumstances were too odd for it, Crystal's face couldn't help but twitch, holding back a smile, "Quite weird, you are... But if you lied to me, I'll..."

"Shush," Silver interrupted her with a somewhat odd look, "Please don't try to threaten me. I don't like it." And god did he underestimate how much he didn't like it as Crystal felt a chill go down her spine upon looking at his calm eyes, so bright yet so dark at the same time.

"I don't lie... You do not have to trust me on that, you just have to observe my actions in the future, and they should tell you what you need to know," Silver calmly said, "Now, tell me everything you know."
