24 Chapter 24

Chapter 24: An Interview

Dozens of Police Vehicles and personnel circled around the arena as numerous members of the equalist were arrested for the account of terrorism.

The biggest catch however was not the underlings of this announced terrorist group; but the very leader of this movement. Amon.

Tied in multiple cuffs, his entire torso tied in a metal band, his feet clasped in chains, he was on total lockdown. The once mighty symbol of fear now stood as nothing but a caged beast, looking helpless as he was transported very carefully into a highly protected vehicle.

The crowd that surrounds the arrest was a lot, but not enough compared to the crowd circling around Jiran.

The Hero of the City. The Mysterious Airbender that appeared out of nowhere.

Questions hurling here and there, order not being foreseen. It was a cacophony of chaos, as intense curiosity surged from the reporters.

"Are you really an Airbender!??" Asked one of the reporters. Of course this was the first time someone addressed it, as rumors of a new airbender only just began recently with no proper proof but now he appeared before them to truly answer this bogering question and verify the rumor.

"Yes, I am an Airbender." The grey haired young man confirmed as he waved his hand creating a wind gust that blew the reporter's hat off from his face.

Gasp!!

Shock came from everyone. This was unprecedented! A new airbender joined in! The reporters were so shock that some of them even dropped their pen.

"H-How? How is this possible? The whole world thought that Airbenders were gone except for Avatar Aang and his family!"

Yeah, Tenzin wanted to know this too. He was of course shocked the first time he saw Jiran, maybe even amongst all of the crowd he was the most curious, clearly shown by his widening ears and leaning body. He was beside Jiran.

He just didn't ask him yet because Jiran didn't speak up about it either. There's gotta be a reason why he's quiet. As much as he wanted answers he respected his privacy and that's why he has yet to inquire Jiran of this question.

And now an opportunity presented itself to satisfy his thirst for truth.

"I don't really know my origin myself, one day I was just an Airbender, that's something I wish to know too. But I did come up with two strange conclusions, one was that I came from a long lost lineage of Airbender who escaped the massacre or I'm Avatar Aang's illegitimate son. I'm leaning more on the first one haha" Jiran chuckled lightheartedly as if it wasn't a big deal but for the press it was. And more so than Tenzin, he didn't even consider that possibility but now that he thought of it, it was very likely.

Let's weigh the conclusions.

The first conclusion was very, very unlikely. All of the airbenders died in the Air Nomad Genocide.

The Air Nomad Genocide was a mass slaughter committed by the Fire Nation that resulted in the near eradication of the Air Nomads and the fauna that lived within their territories and air temples.

The only human survivor of the initial attack and its aftermath was Avatar Aang, who was ironically the prime target.

And ever since then not a single Air Nomad was seen alive of course except for Avatar Aang after a hundred years.

Some may conclude that they are in hiding during the One Hundred Year War but Avatar Aang ended the war so they were given freedom to show themselves, maybe not after the war ended fresh but maybe in the establishment of the Air Temple Island but none of them showed themselves.

Which led to the conclusion that there was no more Airbender left, but this is not absolute.

This is a very plausible conclusion too but…

The second conclusion is the most enticing for the press, something the people would like to hear. And the reporters were really looking forward to leaning on that one, whether it be true or not.

Because even if it's not true, they can still put flames on it which will benefit them most.

"Question for Councilman Tenzin!" One of the reporters surged.

Tenzin, still lost in his thoughts, jolted from surprise. He looked at the reporter and addressed him.

"Were you the one who defeated Amon?" He asked. Tenzin stepped up a bit and leaned on the microphone before speaking.

"No, I was not the one who defeated him but Jiran." He clarified. Their eyes lit up in ecstasy as jucy news came to them. Oh it will be a great payday for the press, I tell you that.

"But what about the Avatar? What did she contribute to the arrest? Was it true that Avatar Korra was useless in the attack!?" A fat reporter asked. When his words resounded all of them took a pause and looked at the direction of the avatar.

The young woman from the southern water tribe was on the side with her wounds being tended while she was looking down in shame.

Of course she's feeling ashamed of herself. Instead of doing her duties as the avatar she indulged himself in Pro-bending that she didn't even win. What's worse was because she was so immersed in Pro-bending she didn't manage to respond quickly to the attack.

And for her the most embarrassing thing was that her friend, Jiran, was the one who did her job.

"I- uh— mm" Tenzin stummered, he didn't have any words to defend her. It may be harsh but that's the cold truth, Korra in her indulgence failed her duty as the Avatar and let some mysterious airbender do it instead.

"This was her plan." Suddenly a voice spoke up that made everyone freeze.

"W-would you care to elaborate that?" The fat reporter stuttered as he felt Jiran looked at him solely.

"This operation was planned by her. She put herself in the spotlight at the Pro-bending Arena to lure Amon out so that his reign of terror would finally be over. If you're looking for someone to thank, don't thank me but her." Jiran declared with a smile. Then he looked at Korra who was looking at him with wide eyes, her lips trembling from gladness.

Ever since she came here to Republic city, she has done nothing but try her best to do her avatar duties but people were somehow always against her and tried to antagonize her.

It was very painful of course since she was just trying to do what her identity demands her to. And that is to maintain peace but people were always adamant that she was not needed anymore.

It's like these people are ungrateful. They are saying "Now that we can stand on our own feet, we don't need an Avatar anymore"

But Jiran, he was always there for her. He was true to his words, he will be there for her, always.

Soon she held her head down and sobbed silently as she felt emotional.
