Chapter 12: Korra's First Mission and Overconfidence

"What was that about?" Korra said while blushing, while looking up at Jiran's eyes.

Since Jiran was towering over her she had to lift her head up to look at him in the eyes making her look adorable in the eyes of Jiran.

"What do you mean by that?" Asked Jiran acting oblivious.

"You suddenly grabbed my waist!" Korra said.

"And?"

"You grabbed my waist!" Korra repeated.

"It's for the act okay. And besides, I'm sure you enjoyed it, haha" Jiran laughed.

"I- I — umm-" Korra stummered. Yes, she did like that Jiran took the initiative but she won't admit that. Now she doesn't know why she was jealous in the first place now that Jiran did that.

"Anyways, you still have something to do," Jiran pointed at the gathering crowd around her. Then he walked away from her and said,

"Don't worry, I'll be watching from the sideline"

In front of the entire upper echelon of Republic City, Korra announced her participation in the task force which made the press go into uproar from excitement.

Immediately articles were made about it and the city was assured. Finally, a sense of peace washed over the citizens for the first time in a long while.

"Are you sure she made the right decision?" Tenzin asked worriedly at Jiran who shrugged.

"Either she made the right choice or not, we are yet to find out"

And as intended, Korra joined the Task Force. Their first mission was overwhelmingly successful which made the entire city cheer and her a bit overconfident..

Jiran expected this outcome and was pretty proud of her.

Tenzin on the other hand was nervous since Korra was still under his tutelage, if something bad ever happens to Korra it would be on his conscience.

But thankfully his worries were unfounded as Korra succeeded her first mission. Their first mission was to attack a secret chi-blocking training facility, which has gone fantastically well.

However what Tenzin didn't expect was Korra's sudden declaration in front of the press.

"Question for the Avatar! Amon remains at large. Why have you failed to locate him?" A question came from a daring reporter.

"You want to know why? Because Amon is hiding in the shadows like a coward. Amon, I challenge you to a duel! No task force, no chi-blockers, just the two of us tonight at midnight on Avatar Aang Memorial Island. Let's cut to the chase and settle this thing, if you're man enough to face me"

Tenzin gasped at Korra's sudden shocking declaration.

At Korra's challenge, a mysterious and subtle smile emerged from Jiran's lips. It was small so no one noticed it, but whatever that smile means, it was soon to be found out.

On the shore of Republic city, Korra was there along with everyone, including Jiran and Tenzin. The two were looking anxiously at Korra.

The Avatar boarded the small boat, the vessel that will transport her to Avatar Aang Memorial Island.

"Korra, this is madness!" Tenzin protested with Korra giving a defiant look.

"Don't try to stop me and don't follow me!" She said with furrowed eyes.

"Tenzin is right Korra, this is insanity. I know that you're pretty stupid but this is a new level of stupidity!" Jiran said then he used his airbending to board the same boat as her and grabbed her arms.

"Don't stop me, Jiran! You were the one that told me that I should not run from my duties as the avatar and that I should not be scared of Amon! I am doing what my duties expect me to do!" Korra said with a loud voice, surprising Jiran and even Tenzin.

"Look… Jiran, I'm not blaming you for giving me that advice. I'm even thankful for it but as you said 'you don't run away from fear, you face it' so here I am facing it. This is my choice and I stand by it." Korra said resolutely which made Jiran back off. He saw the look of determination in her eyes and decided that he should respect her choice.

"Sigh… fine but be careful out there" Jiran spoke with a smile as the latter smiled back.

"Thank you, Jiran" Then she leaned over to the airbender and hugged him which caught him off by surprise. Even Tenzin blushed a bit by Korra's initiative actions.

"Just remember Korra, whenever you're in trouble, I'll be sure to come running by your side" And with that Korra hugged him tighter making him chuckle.

With those last words from Jiran, Korra headed to the venue of their fight. Using her waterbending, she bended the water to push her small boat and with that she left behind Tenzin and Jiran looking at her with worry.

However when she arrived there, she was met with a pretty anticlimactic scene. The entire island was empty, of course that didn't make her let her guard down however that didn't apply anymore once the third hour passed.

Hours and hours passed and yet no sign of Amon was seen or even felt, at that she thought that Amon backed down from their fight.

More time continued to pass and still no sign.

"Guess you're a no show Amon, who's scared now" She yawned, then she walked away from the rooftop where she and Amon were supposed to fight and jumped down.

She was walking leisurely when suddenly she heard a wheezing sound in the air. She was immediately alerted but it was too late.

The projectile that whizzed passed through the air caught her legs, catching her off guard and making her fall off the ground.

"AAGHHH!"

Then the rope that was tying her dragged her down, something pulled her. Sucking her into the darkness of the island.

"HIYA!"

FFFFFSSSSSHHHHH!

She freed herself by burning the rope pulling her using firebending, however when the light from her flame illuminated the darkness the dozen human figures were revealed.

It was the chi-blockers, henchman of Amon.

"Hiya! Ha!" She punched her fist in the air producing flames to burn her enemies but the chi-blockers dodged and tied her arms.

"Ah!" Panic filled her, the dark seeping into her being.

"Agghh!"

FSSSSHHHH!

She once again punched her fist in the air, extending her arms to produce fiery red flames once again but like the last, her arms were caught by another rope.

And with that her two arms were tied. However she didn't give up, she used her legs this time and started kicking to create more flames to fend off the chi blockers but she was outnumbered and outskilled.

Pa! Pa! Pa! Pa! Pa!

The chi-blocker got to her blind spot and attacked her chi-spot, taking away her bending momentarily and paralyzing her.

Now panic finally seeped in fully. Fear of what's about to happen to her filling her head, her heart beating more and more furiously as she paled. Despair.
