For those of you wondering how Kai got into the military when he was 13. The answer is... plot. And very good physical features and forgery skills. No one's gonna look at a 174cm tall man and then at his perfectly forged ID and think, 'Oh that's a child.'

And I don't think the military back then would do background checks since the LOK period is based the WW2 tech and policies period. Soldiers are soldiers in their period.

Those guys at the electric plant just casually used lightning bending, so I think Kai's gonna pick that up really quickly.

And the matter on how he improved quickly in firebending. He's been using the correct way of firebending since the start of the story, he meditates and uses chi daily, plus the cartoon and him watching anime in my general really helps him a lot in developing new moves.
