A SUDDEN TURN IN EVENT

The cool morning breeze enveloped me as I stood before the school building, deeply breathing it in. With a quick farewell from Mom as she rounded the driveway after dropping me off, I began limping my way to class. With each step, my heart began thumping away in my chest at the thought of seeing Rex.

As I stepped into the classroom, a sense of emptiness greeted me, with neither of my friends in sight, particularly Lily, known for her punctuality. My attention was drawn to a girl tightly gripping Rex's backpack. Ah! So Rex was the early bird today. If memory served me right, the girl's name was Nicole. Why was she holding onto Rex's bag? As she spotted me, she confidently strode over and struck a pose.

"Hey Sydney, Rex said you should bring his backpack to the rooftop," she said.

"What?" I asked, uncertain if I had heard correctly.

With just my one question, Nicole's patience snapped.
