Side Story: Arrion's Origin

In the Kingdom of Ventess lived the Sayate family. Sayaka Sayate was a beautiful woman with glowing tan skin and her husband Takeo who was the complete opposite with extremely pale skin and sharp features. In between them sat a three year old boy named Arrion who had his mother's skin tone and his father's sharp features. Arrion had a habit of staring at his father's hands where he always had a thick pair of leather gloves on. Takeo noticed his son and said, "Hopefully, Arrion your ability won't be as strong as mine. Everything I touch with my bare hands freezes. These gloves have a heating element to keep the cold from leaking out."

Arrion didn't quite understand what his father meant with those words but instead just enjoyed his time with his parents. The king of Ventess sent his family into an icy area far from Ventess to claim land for the kingdom. Traveling for ten days by carriage had taken its toll on young Arrion who slept most of the time. After arriving at the designated quardinates they exited the carriage to find a deserted village.

Arrion watched as his father took a few steps toward the village when something flew into the side of Takeo's head. His body went limp in the snow as Sayaka ran to help. In less than a second another object had been shot toward them piercing Sayaka's head. Watching in horror Arrion slowly made his way toward them until he heard a loud yelp coming from one of the houses. A wolf the size of a carriage walked out carrying the body of a Ventess soldier in its mouth with a crossbow dangling from its arm.

Before he realized it he was surrounded by wolves. He felt something in his gut building. He's never felt like this before. He let his rage take over, screaming as loud as he could a huge dome of ice with spikes on the inside formed around the village as hundreds of weapons made of ice started to form in the air around him. The biggest of the wolves looked around in horror before slowly making its way toward Arrion and laying down.

He grieved for the next week with the wolves. Arrion had created a grand mausoleum of ice to store his parents' bodies. Noticing his reflection in the ice, his black hair turned white, his brown eyes gray, and his skin paler than his father's, he looked like a ghost. Arrion wrapped himself in a thick cloak along with makeshift gloves to cover his hands. Wandering the frozen plains he walked until he finally noticed lights in the distance. Stumbling into a small village he made his way to the closest building and collapsed at the door.

Slowly opening his eyes he quickly looked around. Someone had taken him inside and wrapped him up in a lot of blankets. Noticing footsteps getting closer he shot out of bed and formed two daggers while backing closer to the wall. The door opened slowly as an elderly couple entered the room. The old man noticed Arrion's defensive stance and put his hands up with his palms facing forward and said, "Easy now. We're not gonna hurt you. You were lying outside our door.".

Arrion tried to speak but it felt like his vocal cords were frozen. The old woman walked up to him and handed him a cup of tea. Arrion felt his eyes welling up with tears as he drank the tea. He felt the ice on his vocal cords melt and said, "Thank you for helping me.".

He explained what had happened to his family and asked, "Can I stay here?".

The old lady wrapped her arms around him and answered, "Of course.".

He introduced himself, "My name is Arrion Sayate. I'm three years old.".

The elderly couple spoke at once, "You can call us Mrs. and Mr. Johnson. Nice to meet you.".

Over the next few months Arrion spent most of his time learning to control his abilities. Day by day he grew stronger and the air around him grew colder inside his room till the point where the Johnson's weren't able to enter. Wrapping himself tightly in many layers of cloth was the only way to keep the cold from leaking out. Leaving his room Mr. Johnson stopped him in the hallway and said, "Arrion, I found a place where you can train without worrying about us.".

Arrion asked, "Can you take me there?".

Mr. Johnson grabbed his thick coat and motioned for Arrion to follow. After leaving the house they walked for what felt like days until they happened upon an entrance to a cave. Arrion stepped closer until his feet were barely inside when he felt a strong impact on his back sending him flying inside. Mr. Johnson said, "Nothing personal Arrion, but you weren't supposed to survive the ambush. Finally got the orders to make you disappear.".

With those parting words the cave entrance exploded causing debris to block Arrion's way out. Sitting in the cave alone his slowly healing heart shattered into a million pieces. His eyes started to water but instead of crying he started to laugh hysterically. Falling further and further into darkness he stood up and made his way deeper into the cave. He heard something ahead of him but couldn't see anything. Feeling his face move to form a huge grin he was ready for death. The creature got closer and closer until he could feel its breath on his face. Arrion heard his mother's voice saying, "Live my son.".

Arrion quickly formed armor around him along with a dagger in each hand. His eyes adjusting a little he could make out some of the creature that looked like a giant bear. Hoping his ice was hard enough he rushed it swinging his weapons toward where he thought the throat would be but before he hit anything he was thrown into the wall cracking the back of his armor. The bear placed its massive paw on top of him and started pushing its entire weight onto Arrion. Feeling his armor, his mind started racing until an idea hit and he stabbed the bear's leg and forced all the cold in his body to flow through the dagger.

In the next few moments the bear's paw stopped pushing down and its body went limp. Arrion quickly shot up and realized he passed out after the bear died. He messily skinned the bear in the dark and ate some of its meat barely holding back vomit. Arrion spent the next fourteen years training inside the cave while killing whatever stumbled up from the deeper levels. Arrion felt like he was ready to enter back into the world so he moved the debris out of the entrance and made his way toward where Mr. Johnson lived. Arrion felt nothing but rage as he thought of how to get rid of them. When the village was in sight he started to make a disk of ice and slowly made it thicker. By the time he was just outside he willed the disk to hover twenty feet above the tallest house and started spreading it out until it covered the entirety of the village blocking the snowfall.

Villagers slowly made their way out of their houses. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson walked out and immediately noticed Arrion. Mr. Johnson looked toward the sky in horror as he realized what Arrion was going to do. Arrion dropped the impossibly large piece of ice. It made an impact with the village flattening everything in sight. A newspaper was the only thing that survived. Reading it he decided to make his way toward the Foract kingdom.
