Ch 20: Alchemy

Shocked, looking at the place, Zane blurted out in his mind, 'The heck. What is this shithole?'

"Hehe liken the place? This is the place where you will work," a voice from behind reached his ear. After saying this, the old man left hurriedly not wanting to stay even for a second.

Zane was left staring at what is happening in front of him. It is a ward full of groaning and screaming patients. Within the ward, he saw one person that looks like a doctor, a smiling old man whose age is around 60-70 years old. He saw that the old man was trying to do a suture on a man with a large tear on his belly.

It seems that the man is already dead but the old man doesn't seem bothered by it just continuing closing the tear, ignoring the other patients. After he was done, he saw Zane standing on the done.

"Oh hello! Welcome to the barracks. Finally! they sent a new one to help me. As you can see, we are really understaffed. I am Horus, the medicine man in this ward. "

Zane did not respond yet, still looking at the dead man in the bed who died from blood loss.

"Hey, young man! Are you okay?"

Zane was brought back to his reality when Horus started shaking him.

"Oh yes, my name is Zane, I am the helper," Zane responded.

"From now on you will be working here when you have the free time. As you saw in the contract, we pay you 20 contribution points per month. If you successfully treat someone, you get extra 3 contribution points, however, accidentally killing them will cost you 1 point."

"Because there is no time to waste, you need to start now. I am assuming you have skills since you applied for this job, but even if you do not have, worry not; you can practice yourself to the dying patients they are over there," Horus pointed at the end of the hallway.

"You don't need to worry about making mistakes. Your contribution points will not be deducted today." Horus said while grinning.

Zane was sickened to the core. His understanding of medical standards shattered.

"Oh, btw, if you need the medical herbs, they are in the other room. Just don't so much of them, the higher-ups don't like spending money on us."

"You can start now. If you have any questions let me know." After saying it, Horus went back to his next patient.

"Healer! help me! I am dying here, I still have a family!" said a patient at the end of the room shouted.

Zane quickly went and looked at the patient. The patient is missing one leg and one arm and has a few large lacerations all over the place.

Looking at the patient, it is a miracle that he is still alive. His face is pale white due to massive blood loss.

The wounds started to fester and infection already showing.

The patient started to be impatient and shouted.

"Hurry up and treat me or I will kill you!"

"You are already dying and you still have the gall to threaten me. Shut up or I will just let you die, here and now.

The patient was scared and just became quiet. Zane can see that he is trying to resist on passing out but his head started drooping."

"Don't pass out! otherwise, you won't be able to wake up again."

When he heard it, he was scared. So he bit his tongue to keep him awake.

Remembering his basic training as a nurse, Zane went to pick up a knife on the side and sanitize it with clean water. He started removing all the necrotic meat and started cleaning the wounds one by one with precision.

With his strength, agility, and precision his skills were flowing quite well. A regular nurse would have had trouble doing things alone, however, with his increased stats he was like already a professional doctor.

Suddenly he saw two prompts.

When he saw both, he was tempted on adding his skills point to the Medical skills. If he adds it for sure that he will be the best medical doctor back on earth, but he hardened his heart and went against it. Now his skill points are quite important. He is not sure when is the next fight will be, and there is a higher chance that it can be another life and death situation for him.

Anyway, for him, medical skill is not the most important since his standards are way better than the so-called doctor in this ward.

He has knowledge of anatomy and basic medicine back on earth. Unlike this backward world, they don't care to understand little details because there is such thing as magic. He assumed that a healer can easily regenerate the wounds or regrow the limbs, it is just that no one would come to waste their time on common people and the slaves.

When Zane was done closing the wounds, he saw his patient's hand falling on the side, eyes closed. He is dead.

Zane stilled his heart, there is no point in regretting because he is no miracle man. He can only do so much without magic.

He moved into the next patient, a patient with a lot of bite and claw marks. "Another headache. Identify"

This person seems dying because of some kind of rabbis. Looking at the guy, he looks horrendous. His constitution is keeping him alive. However, he was soon to die of a disease.

Zane went to track the medication room, he saw a bunch of herbs on the shelves. Some of them are untouched. Without hesitation, he used identity.

What he saw amazed him.

Green Yarrow Grass

Uses: Stop bleeding on small cuts. Best combined with other herbs. Must be ground to paste before applying to wounds.

Purple Calendula

Uses: Revitalized marrows and help revitalize blood circulation. Helps stop bleeding.

Purple Jewelweed

Uses: Antidote for common poisoning, rabbis, diseases, and viruses. Must be boiled at a high temperature. Drinking warm for best results.

Zane found what he needed. Although the information is quite basic, it was definitely very helpful.

He grabbed the Purple Jewelweed and search for a small pot. Then, he boiled it according to the instruction of the system. However, before he could continue doing so. He saw that his system gave a prompt.

Remember that his system has three tabs. Previously, the only thing working is the skills tab. So he urgently clicked on the alchemy section. The alchemy cauldron in the middle of the page is now highlighted.

On the left side of the page, there is a list of herbs, grass, and plants he identified.

Excitedly, he started experimenting on it. He tried to drag the Green Yarrow grass and purple calendula. When he tried to click on the cauldron nothing happened. He was a bit disappointed but still did not give up. He made a few experiments, then by adding the Purple Calendula and the Purple Jewelweed. With amazement, he saw that the cauldron lighted up.
