Daylight at Night

"Y-yes."

After racking my brain I went with the "say as little as possible" approach. I can't lie and silence would increase suspicion. The best I could do was to say less and pray. Unlike the other questions, she had follow ups for this one.

"What was it?"

".....it was da-dark....it looked hu-humanoid."

She stared at me as if waiting for me to light up, but nothing happened. I was technically telling the truth. I didn't say it was too dark to see, but stated the fact that it was dark at the end of the encounter. Also they were humanoid... to be more exact they used to be humans. Ambiguity is my friend here.

"How many of them were there?"

I hold up two fingers.

"Were you acquainted with them before the encounter?"

Another tough question. What is this an interrogation?!? Ah right... it is. Hmmmm.

"I do not ... re-really know th-them..."

Another hard stare. It feels like she is staring into my soul, please don't look in there, it's shy. After a few moments, she broke eye contact and jotted stuff down in her booklet. I mean.... I really don't know them, they are just two random people to me.

"One of the guard's body is missing. Where is it?"

She didn't even ask if I knew this time. It is like she knows I know what happened, do I look that informed?

"Th-that guard....the b-body....toward the w-woods."

I breathe a sigh of relief as nothing starts glowing on me. Please let this be over soon, I'm not sure if I can handle much more.

"That guard, is he dead?"

*Nods head*

I can definitely say he is dead. Whether he is the walking dead... well I'm glad she didn't ask that.

"Did you kill him?"

*Shakes head*

"Did you have anything to do with starting this attack?"

*Shakes head*

"One last question. Did you do anything to the guard's body?"

Oh this is a loaded last question.

"I...did n-not touch th-the guard's body."

I mean I definitely didn't touch it. I was just commanding it. Please just stop staring already. Oh it looks like it is over.

"Those are all my questions. Please rest and thank you for your cooperation. Don't leave this room, I will come back and discharge you once the investigation is over."

She got up and was about to leave. I shouldn't ask anything else. I should let her leave and be done with it, but I had to know why we went through all this. She even said the serum was rare, which probably meant it was expensive. Why would they waste it on a random creature attack of a wagon carting around some no named people?

"C-can I ask one thing?"

She looked surprised for a second, but immediately returned back to neutral.

"Of course."

"W-why is this s-so important?"

I thought I saw a faint smile on her lips, as if she was applauding me for noticing, or maybe just having the guts to ask the question.

"Normally something like this would not be this big of an issue. However, in this case it is important for two reasons. One, the monster defeated is a Draft. While its origins are... unique and unsavory, it is quite a powerful monster. It normally takes a full party of low-tier Adventurers to defeat one. The fact that this one had been defeated by a guard and an unknown wagon passenger... well you understand our skepticism. The second reason is due to the identity of the guard. It seems the Mayor had banished his youngest child, who was a hedonist, to fend for himself. He had hoped it would cause him to mature and grow. He still loves his son. As you'd expect he was quite insistent on getting all the details of his death and finding all those responsible."

Well that all made sense. Essentially a powerful monster was taken down by two people and the Mayor's banished son was killed. I was an unknown and they didn't want to take any chances, especially with the Mayor breathing down their necks.

"Th-thanks."

She nodded her head at me and turned around. She had just reached the door when she stopped and turned around. Did she forget to ask me something?

"Did you enjoy looking at my breasts earlier?"

"N-no! De-definitely not!"

I had panicked. I did not expect that she would ask another question, let alone THAT question. Suddenly I realized the room was growing extremely bright. It was like a 60 watt light bulb had been turned on.

"No...th-this...I-I...it wasn't on purpose!"

The light got even brighter. It was starting to seem like daylight almost in the room. I looked over at her in panic and saw she had a mischievous smile on her face.

"Mmmm it looks like the serum isn't defective after all."

Without letting me say another word she left the room bathed in what seemed like sunlight.
