4 System Path

If he left everything up to it, he might even lose his daily quest.

The mission-focused system is a system where he would receive different quests that are generated by certain criteria and he would be given corresponding rewards depending on the results. Some missions would also come with penalties.

He also put a big no on this one.

The first option was better.

He might not know how he died if this were to happen.

He could do anything to improve, but he did not want to be given an impossible mission with an impossible penalty.

The last option was the milestone-based system. This is a system where the system provides him with certain resources and skills at the beginning and he has to accomplish something with said resources.

This system was indeed attractive but it also came with a trap.

At the end of a certain period, his achievements would be graded and rewards would be distributed accordingly.

If he failed to meet the standard, penalties would occur.

The good thing was that he could reject these missions at the beginning as he could be provided with all the necessary information at that time. The penalties would also be stated.

The rewards depended on his achievements.

Missions could also be progressive thus the name milestone.

He chose this option straight away.

This might seem like a dull choice, but it was the most stable one he had.

With the behavior of the system, he could not feel comfortable leaving his fate in its hands.

He could also guess behind the system's behavior but he decided to close his mouth since he did not know how it could react.

He was not naïve enough to think that the system was here for him because he was special or something.

He was more inclined to believe that he somehow met the requirements and that the system was bound to him.

But after learning that he was useless, the system lost interest.

All he could think was that something was holding it back from hurting him.

He had to be extra careful.

After choosing his path, the system store opened to him.

The system did not speak to him anymore but he could see a new panel pop up.

There were tons of things in the store and he could hardly believe what he was seeing.

There was also a price marked to the bottom left of every option and the array of things he could buy stunned him.

There were even things that came straight from Wuxia novels like the marrow cleansing pill and other cultivation pills that went for astronomical figures.

He ignored the numbers since he was afraid his fragile heart might not take it.

Scrolling to a friendlier zone, Roy started looking at the resources he could get.

He had to say that the path he had chosen was awesome.

He did not have to buy anything upfront and it was more like a loan.

Even those things with crazy numbers were available for him to take.

He was just not confident that he could meet the milestones or accumulate enough points or money to offset them.

He looked at the things he was comfortable with and decided to buy the Universal Language Skill Level 10.

He specified the level since he did not want the system to trap him with some crazy stuff.

The devil was in the details and the world had taught him this truth already.

As he was waiting for something to happen, he felt a stream of information flood his brain and he nearly fainted from the influx.

He was not that smart, to begin with.

He might be street-smart but academics were his enemy.

The information was forcefully stuffed into his brain and he could not forget it even if he wanted to.

His eyes turned bloodshot and a throbbing headache ensued.

He slowly lost his focus and slept like a log.

Waking up in the morning with a splitting headache and a hangover.

It was like he was hammered after downing a whole barrel of tequila.

And what singing of the birds in the morning. These bastards were just horny as fuck and did not have hands to do themselves.

The neighbor's dog was incessantly cursing the pedestrians and he was sure it was mental.

"Wait… WHAT!"

It was only now that he understood what was going on.

He could understand the sounds of birds and the barking of dogs now.

As he was thinking of all this, the programming languages he thought to be Greek started unraveling in his mind as he processed everything in an instant.

His breathing became hurried and he did not know how to vent his emotions.

In the end, he could only give himself a smack across the face to make sure he was not dreaming.

A bright smile appeared on his face as he started laughing like an idiot by himself.

With the system, if he did not make something out of himself, he truly deserved to be skinned and hanged.

'System, if I fail to impress you by the time I die, you can have my soul to play with as you like.'

[Affirmative]

He immediately regretted his rush words.

This was a stupid mistake.

He got excited and said something he shouldn't.

'Can I take back what I said?'

Seeing that there was no response, he could only give up.

'At least, don't make things difficult for me, ok. If I fail to impress you in the next ten years, you can do whatever you want.'

[…]

Seeing some sort of reaction, he knew that at least he had some time before the system started messing with him.

He had to achieve something before it got tired of waiting.

He felt an invisible pressure mounting on him.

He was sure nothing on this planet would easily impress the system. He had to do something out of this world.

Looking at the time, he hurried to the kitchen before his mother started smothering him.
